Head-to-head · The Canaves question

Canaves Oia Suites or Epitome?

Same family, same standard, a short walk apart — and one real decision: the Caldera or the sunset. This is #01 on my Santorini ranking against #01 on my Greece top 10, which makes it the closest call on this site.

Choose Oia Suites

If the postcard is non-negotiable

The classic caldera-luxury experience, perfected — set higher than most for privacy, completely renovated, with the best spa product on the Caldera and the single best suite I saw in Greece.

Choose Epitome

If serenity beats the cliff

A short walk from Oia near Ammoudi Bay: gardens behind volcanic-rock walls, two-bedroom suites with pools and dining decks, no age restrictions, and a real sunset into the open Aegean.

Whichever you choose, book a table at Omnia — Epitome’s restaurant above Ammoudi Bay was the best hotel restaurant I ate at across the entire trip, and it’s worth the reservation even if you’re sleeping on the Caldera.

The question behind the question

First trip: the Caldera. Every trip after: Epitome.

First-time visitors picturing the classic cliffside image are choosing a different experience at Epitome — and if that image is non-negotiable, book Oia Suites. It was the best hotel I saw for first-timers on the island, and I’d be hard pressed to recommend anything else first for that trip.

But the single best hotel I experienced across the Greek islands was Epitome. What the location buys you is space and serenity — a private world minutes from Oia’s crowds — plus the best sunset in Greece and dining the Caldera hotels can’t match. That’s why it holds #01 on my Greece list even ranked beside its more famous sibling.
