The review

A brighter, more modern take on Florence — quiet and green in the hills above the city, with sweeping views from almost every room.

Collegio alla Querce is a brighter, more modern take on Florence. It sits in the hills about a 30-minute walk from the center — quiet and green, with an impressive art collection and sweeping views from almost every room.

The appeal is light, space and the view: the city laid out below you, and a scenic walk when you want to be in it. The mood is a little more romantic and it draws a slightly younger crowd, while still being wonderful for families.

I’ve slept here, not just toured it, so I can tell you which rooms, views and layouts are worth asking for. I’m a preferred partner of Auberge Resorts Collection, and this is my pick for return visitors, couples, and families who want a countryside feel without giving up Florence.

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
You’re above the city, not in it. It’s about a 30-minute walk into Florence — a scenic one. If you’d rather step straight out into the streets, look at Four Seasons Firenze.
02
Ask for the view you want. Almost every room has one, and they differ. Tell me what matters and I’ll request the right room.
03
Deciding between the two? I’ve stayed here and toured both Four Seasons Firenze and Villa San Michele. Here’s my Four Seasons vs Collegio and Collegio vs Villa San Michele side-by-sides.
04
Transfers and drivers, arranged. I arrange private transfers from Florence’s airport or Santa Maria Novella station, and drivers for days in Chianti, Siena or the Val d’Orcia, so nobody has to navigate Tuscan back roads or park in a hill town.
