The third of my three featured Florence hotels is the most personal in scale: Hotel Lungarno, the Lungarno Collection's riverside classic — nautical-chic rooms hanging over the Arno with Ponte Vecchio views, steps from everything.

The Ferragamo family's flagship sits directly on the river in the Oltrarno, and the right rooms put the Ponte Vecchio in your window like a painting. Crisp blue-and-white interiors and a serious art collection give it a personality the palazzo hotels don't attempt.

This is my Florence pick for first-timers who want the city at their feet: cross the bridge and you're at the Uffizi in minutes, yet the Oltrarno side keeps you among the artisans and wine bars where Florentines actually live.
