Ritz Paris

The word “ritzy” exists because of this hotel — Bar Hemingway, the Ritz Club pool, and a century of legends on Place Vendôme.

There are grand hotels, and then there is the hotel the word comes from. César Ritz opened his masterpiece on Place Vendôme in 1898, Escoffier ran the kitchen, and a century of legends followed — Coco Chanel lived here for decades, Hemingway 'liberated' the bar that now carries his name.

The four-year restoration brought it all back to full shine: the gilded salons, the garden, the Ritz Club pool downstairs that looks like a Roman bath, and Bar Hemingway pouring what many consider the best martini in Europe. It is unapologetically classic — this is the gilt-and-brocade Paris fantasy, executed at the highest level in the world.

I send clients here for the once-in-a-lifetime trips: milestone anniversaries, the honeymoon that has to be perfect, the mother-daughter trip she'll never stop talking about. Nobody regrets the Ritz.

What Stood Out

The Details That Made The List

Bar Hemingway. Tiny, wood-panelled, and the most storied bar in Paris — Colin Field's martinis alone justify the stay.

The Ritz Club pool. A gilded, frescoed swimming hall unlike any other hotel pool in Europe — worth planning an afternoon around.

Place Vendôme out the door. The great jewelry houses are your neighbors, and the Tuileries is a two-minute walk.

Know Before You Book

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

Classic means classic. The decor is gilt, brocade and Louis XV throughout — glorious if that's the dream, and worth knowing if you lean modern (that's Cheval Blanc).

Garden-side rooms are the sleeper pick. Vendôme-facing suites get the postcard, but the garden rooms are quieter and catch beautiful light.

Book the table and the bar stool ahead. Bar Hemingway takes no reservations and queues form — go early in the evening, or let the concierge steer your timing.

Some hotels have history; this one is history. When the occasion deserves the definitive Paris palace, this is the booking.
