The Splendido earned its spot on my tennis ranking with a court terraced above Portofino's harbor, the Ligurian coastline stretching out beyond the net. Every hotel on that list has a view; very few have Portofino itself as the view.

The hotel is a former monastery folded into the hillside above one of Italy's most photographed harbors — Belmond's Riviera showpiece, and a Fora Reserve property in my partner book. Terraced gardens, the famous pool, and the walk (or shuttle) down to the piazzetta define the days here.

Want the real Riviera at about half the price? Look at Grand Hotel Miramare in Santa Margherita Ligure, 15 minutes away. It’s a restored 1904 grand hotel in a town where the Milanese still summer, with a big pool and one of the largest beach clubs in Liguria. For most of my clients, it’s the better stay.

Splendido versus Splendido Mare. The hillside hotel and its little sister on the harborfront are different products — I'll place you based on how you want to live for the week.

Portofino is tiny and seasonal. The village is best May through September, and the hotel's calendar follows — shoulder weeks are the value play.

Boats are the point here. A chartered day along the Ligurian coast — Camogli, San Fruttuoso, the Cinque Terre — is the experience I add to nearly every Splendido booking.
