Here's what the booking sites don't mention: only a few dozen taxis serve the entire island, and on cruise-ship days they vanish. The ferry port sits at the bottom of a steep switchback road that backs up for an hour when boats arrive together.
And if your suite hangs on the caldera in Oia, Fira, or Imerovigli, no car reaches your door — the last stretch is a pedestrian path with steps. The one rule I never break: never connect a same-day ferry to an international flight. Summer winds — the famous meltemi — can delay or cancel sailings with little notice. Either fly between your last island and Athens, or spend a final indulgent night in Athens and toast the trip properly.
