Leg 01
Two ways in: a short flight, or a ferry from the port of Piraeus. Both are beautiful in their own way — but they are not equal on the first day of a honeymoon.
About 45 minutes in the air, with multiple departures a day in season. You land rested, with the whole afternoon ahead of you.
My pick for arrival dayRoughly five to eight hours from Piraeus depending on the vessel. Lovely on a calm day — long on a windy one. Better saved for island-to-island hops.
Leg 02
Here’s what the booking sites don’t mention: only a few dozen taxis serve the entire island, and on cruise-ship days they vanish. The ferry port sits at the bottom of a steep switchback road that backs up for an hour when boats arrive together.
And if your suite hangs on the caldera in Oia, Fira, or Imerovigli, no car reaches your door — the last stretch is a pedestrian path with steps. The move: a pre-arranged private transfer timed to your arrival, with a porter from your hotel meeting you to carry the bags down. You carry the champagne.
Leg 03
Pairing islands is the classic Greek honeymoon — and Santorini connects well to all four, though not equally. Milos, Folegandros, and Sifnos sit along the same western Cyclades ferry line, so those hops tend to be shorter and more frequent. Mykonos sits further east, which usually means a longer ferry or a helicopter instead.
Milos, Folegandros, and Sifnos are usually the quicker, more frequent connections. Mykonos takes longer, with fewer direct sailings. Book seats early for June through September, and favor morning departures — seas build through the day.
Around half an hour to any of the four, caldera views the whole way, and zero dependence on sea conditions — especially useful for reaching Mykonos without the longer ferry. The single best splurge of the trip for many of my couples, arranged through my partnership with Hoper.

The one rule I never break: never connect a same-day ferry to an international flight. Summer winds — the famous meltemi — can delay or cancel sailings with little notice. Either fly between your last island and Athens, or spend a final indulgent night in Athens and toast the trip properly.
