3 Mistakes Couples Make Between the Greek Islands

The hotels get all the attention. The days between them are where honeymoons quietly go sideways — and where they're easiest to save.

I

Treating the ferry like a train

Greek ferries are wonderful — and they answer to the sea, not the timetable. In July and August the meltemi wind sweeps the Aegean, and sailings get delayed or cancelled with a few hours' notice. Couples who booked the last boat of the day, on the last day of the trip, learn this the hard way.

Do This Instead

Book morning departures on the fast boats, reserve seats the moment your dates are set for summer travel, and fly any leg where a flight exists. The sea is for lazy afternoons, not tight connections.

II

Assuming a taxi will be waiting

On Santorini, only a few dozen taxis cover the entire island — and on cruise-ship days they might as well not exist. The ferry port funnels every arriving boat up one switchback road at once. And if your suite sits on the caldera, the last stretch to your door is a footpath with steps no car can touch.

Do This Instead

Have a private driver confirmed to your exact arrival, with a porter from the hotel meeting you for the bags. You step off the boat, someone says your name, and the hard part is over before it starts.

III

Packing the itinerary too tight

Three islands in seven nights sounds romantic until you're spending every other day in transit — pack, check out, port, boat, port, check in, repeat. The most common regret I hear isn't the island a couple skipped. It's the hours they lost moving between the ones they kept. Worst of all: a same-day ferry connecting to the international flight home, with zero margin if the wind picks up.

Do This Instead

Three nights minimum per island, two islands maximum for a week. Consider the half-hour helicopter hop to buy back a full day. And spend your final night in Athens — a last great dinner beats a nervous morning at the port.
