The review

A whole medieval borgo in the Valdarno hills — the most authentic stay I’ve found in Tuscany.

Il Borro is a medieval village on a wooded ridge in the Valdarno hills, restored stone by stone by the Ferragamo family and run as one estate. The lanes, the terracotta roofs and the little church are the real thing — it’s the most authentic Tuscan stay I’ve walked through.

It reminded me of Aman Sveti Stefan in its layout: an entire historic village turned into the hotel, so you’re sleeping inside the borgo rather than looking at it from a resort across the road. That’s rare, and it’s what makes Il Borro so unique.

There are really two ways to stay. If you’re on your honeymoon, stay in the original borgo — that’s the magic. If you’d rather have a more modern room, the estate’s newer accommodations are a two-minute drive away, with the village still right there for dinner and an evening walk.

I toured it today, and it goes straight onto my Tuscany shortlist. Prices are competitive for the level, and it’s a Relais & Châteaux property and part of Fora Reserve, so the perks apply when you book through me.

What stood out

The details that made the list

01
A real medieval village. Stone houses, narrow lanes and a church on a wooded ridge — the original borgo, not a reconstruction or a resort built to look like one.
02
The Sveti Stefan layout. Like Aman Sveti Stefan, the whole village is the hotel. You walk out of your room and into the borgo.
03
The honeymoon stay. Rooms inside the original borgo are the ones to book for a honeymoon — atmospheric, private and steps from dinner.
04
A modern option two minutes away. Travelers who prefer a newer, more contemporary room can stay in the estate’s accommodations a two-minute drive from the village and still have all of it on the doorstep.
05
Stunning pools. The pools are gorgeous — including an infinity pool that looks out over the woods to the borgo and the hills. (If the pool is the deciding factor, Borgo Pignano has the best of the three borghi.)
06
Competitive pricing. For a stay this distinctive, rates are competitive with the other top Tuscan estates — and Fora Reserve perks apply on top.
Know before you book

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
Pick your stay before you pick your dates. Honeymooners and couples chasing atmosphere should be in the original borgo; if you want a more modern room, the newer accommodations are a two-minute drive away. Tell me which sounds like you and I’ll match the room.
02
You’ll want a car (or a driver). Il Borro sits in the countryside between Florence and Arezzo, so it pairs easily with a few nights in the city. I arrange drivers who know the back roads, and can link it with my other Tuscany estates.
03
Three borghi, three different travelers. Borgo Pignano, Borgo San Felice and Il Borro all offer a different stay for a different traveler, and all three are fantastic. Tell me who’s coming and what you want from Tuscany, and I’ll tell you which one is yours. Here are my side-by-sides: Borgo San Felice or Il Borro and Borgo Pignano or Il Borro. Or see all three side by side.
04
Stay longer than one night. The borgo rewards slowing down. Plan for at least two or three nights so you actually live in the village rather than pass through it.

Fora perks.
And someone who knows the hotel.

Work with me and you get two things: Fora perks, and someone who knows Il Borro personally. Il Borro is part of Fora Reserve, so as a Fora advisor my clients receive a space-available upgrade, daily breakfast, and a hotel credit. I know the property and the team, so I personalize your stay, from the room I request to what’s arranged before you arrive, and I’m your direct line to them while you’re there. Rates are identical to booking direct.

When are you thinking?

Tell me who’s traveling and when. I’ll tell you whether it’s the borgo or the newer rooms, time it to the right season, and build the rest of Tuscany around it.
