The review

A restored hilltop borgo outside Volterra — stone, lavender and a valley view that turns gold every evening.

Borgo Pignano is a villa and a small stone village set on a hilltop outside Volterra, restored and run as one quiet estate. It’s a country stay, close to a farm stay, and a bit remote — there is no town to walk into and no crowd to work around, just the borgo, its gardens and the hills rolling away in every direction.

The view is the reason to come. Dinner is served under a reed-roofed pergola that frames the valley like a painting, and the pool sits on a terrace just below the villa, looking out over the same landscape — the best pool of the three Tuscan borghi I’ve stayed at and visited.

It’s also one of the best villa options in Tuscany. Around nine private villas are spread across the estate, from two to five bedrooms — so families and groups get their own house with the full hotel behind it: two pools plus a separate kids’ pool, tennis, a fantastic gym and a beautiful spa.

I’ve slept here, not just toured it, so I can tell you which rooms and views are worth asking for. It’s a Relais & Châteaux property and part of Fora Reserve. It’s great for couples who want the countryside, for families and friends who want a villa, and for anyone who wants a slower, more private Tuscany than the Chianti circuit.

What stood out

The details that made the list

01
Dinner under the pergola. Tables set under a reed roof with the valley laid out in front of you — book it for sunset, when the light goes gold.
02
The villas. Around nine private villas spread across the estate, from two to five bedrooms — your own house, with hotel service and every amenity a short walk away.
03
The best pool of the three borghi. The main pool is cut into the hillside just below the villa, facing the view — it beats the pools at Borgo San Felice and Il Borro. There’s a second pool and a separate kids’ pool too.
04
Tennis, gym and spa. A tennis court, a genuinely fantastic gym and a beautiful spa — enough to fill the days you don’t leave the estate.
05
A real borgo. Stone houses, a courtyard and a stairway up to the villa — it feels like a village, not a resort, and it’s quiet enough that the loudest thing at night is the wind in the lavender.

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
It’s a bit remote — you’ll want a car (or a driver). That’s the point: this is a country, farm-stay kind of Tuscany. It’s about an hour and a half from Florence. Volterra, San Gimignano and my other Tuscany estates are all within easy reach; I arrange drivers who know the back roads.
02
Traveling as a family or group? Ask about the villas. They run from two to five bedrooms and vary in layout, privacy and view. Tell me who’s coming and I’ll match you to the right one.
03
Stay longer than one night. This is a place to settle into. Plan for at least two or three nights so the pool, the dinners and the drives out don’t compete.
04
There’s a sister house in Florence. Borgo Pignano also runs a Florence address — I’ve stayed at both and can pair the city with the countryside in one trip.
05
Comparing Tuscany estates? Castiglion del Bosco is the big wine-and-golf estate; Castello di Casole is the traditional castle. Borgo Pignano is the quieter, more intimate choice. For a medieval borgo, Borgo San Felice near Siena is the most well-rounded, and Il Borro is the honeymoon pick. Here are my side-by-sides: Borgo San Felice or Borgo Pignano and Borgo Pignano or Il Borro. Or see all three side by side.
