The review

Everywhere I looked, something new caught my eye.

I was very wowed by Orient Express. The eight-year renovation is truly jaw dropping. I have never seen so much marble in my life, perhaps not since the bathrooms at Villa San Michele.

It is the mix that makes it: dark wood with some seventy different kinds of marble, the restored ceilings and the chandeliers. Everywhere I looked, something new caught my eye.

I loved the location, too. It is quiet but convenient, on a canal corner in Cannaregio, away from the San Marco crowds and an easy walk into the city.

What stood out

The details that wowed me

01
The marble. Around seventy kinds, book-matched in the bathrooms and set against dark wood throughout.
02
The ceilings and chandeliers. Painted and coffered ceilings restored to their original glory, lit by Murano glass.
03
The restoration. Eight years of work, and it shows in every room.
04
The location. Quiet but convenient: a calm corner of Cannaregio, close to the station and an easy walk to the sights.
Know before you book

The fine print, from your advisor

01
Ask for the piano nobile. The noble floor, one level above the ground floor, has the highest ceilings, here and in palazzi across Italy.
02
There is no pool. This is a palazzo hotel. If a pool matters, look at Airelles Palladio on Giudecca.
03
Easy by train. It is close to Santa Lucia station, so it works well if you are arriving from Florence, Milan or the Dolomites by rail.
04
Three nights is the sweet spot. Long enough for the city, the islands and a few long lunches.
05
Water taxis, arranged. I arrange the private water taxi from Marco Polo airport to the hotel and private boats to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
