The review

Away from the crowds, five minutes from everything.

Airelles Palladio is set away from the crowds of Venice on Giudecca, and it is an easy five-minute hop across to everything the city has to offer. It is incredibly private and secure, and at the same time lively, social and fun. Sophisticated, but never stuffy.

It is not on the Grand Canal, and I would argue that is a selling point. You get real peace and quiet in a very touristy city. My one fear was that it would feel isolated. It does not, at all. In October it was lively, but never loud.

The arrival is spectacular, and the attention to detail in the finishes, the layout of the gardens and the rooms is truly serene. The rooms are incredibly spacious.

What stood out

The details that made it my number one

01
The arrival. You come in by water to a private landing, and the reveal of the gardens is one of the great hotel arrivals in Europe.
02
A three-story spa. Spa Airelles by Guerlain is remarkable: three floors, with an indoor pool.
03
The outdoor pool and gardens. A stunning pool set in walled gardens, with lawns and pergolas. Space that physically does not exist across the water in San Marco.
04
Four chefs and five bars. Plus a beautiful library. You could stay a week without repeating an evening. The line-up ↓
05
History you can feel. In the penthouse, one room has a slight slope where the original structure could not be changed. Some might call that unfinished. I loved it; it shows how historic the building really is.
The estate

How the estate fits together

Airelles is not one building. It is a small walled estate at the eastern end of Giudecca: three historic buildings, a three-level spa and about a hectare of gardens, all behind the waterfront facing San Marco.

01
Palladio. 23 rooms and suites with views over Venice, beside Palladio’s Le Zitelle church. The lobby, abc kitchens and the Palladio Bar are here.
02
Villa Frollo. 10 rooms, crowned by the four-bedroom Suite del Doge, which looks straight at St. Mark’s. Norbert Niederkofler’s restaurant and the Botanica Frollo Bar are here too.
03
Conventino. 12 rooms at the quiet back of the estate, closest to the pools and the gardens.
04
Spa Airelles by Guerlain. 1,700 square meters over three levels: treatment rooms, a hammam, a sauna, the Yashi Dome and the Domus indoor pool with its mezzanine, plus a fitness area and yoga studio.
05
The 25-meter pool. Hidden in the gardens, with the Pool Bar alongside for pizza and salads all day.
06
The kids’ pool and Kids Club. An 8-meter pool just for children, and a Kids Club with games and creative workshops.
07
Villa Mason. The three-bedroom suite with its own pool and private garden, part of Conventino.
08
The gardens. About a hectare of walled lawns and pergola walks between the buildings.
09
The hotel boats. Private shuttles leave from the hotel’s own landing on the Fondamenta for St. Mark’s.
Dining

Four chefs, five bars

That is a lot of firepower for 45 rooms, and it is a big part of why the estate never feels isolated. You can eat somewhere different every night without crossing the water.

01
Norbert Niederkofler. The three-Michelin-star chef from the Dolomites brings his “Cook the Lagoon” menu to Villa Frollo: Venetian specialties built around the lagoon and its producers.
02
Matsuhisa. The first in Venice. Traditional Japanese cooking in the Nobu style.
03
abc kitchens by Jean-Georges. His first address in Italy, in the Palladio building, with a Venetian and Mediterranean menu.
04
Cédric Grolet. The pastry chef’s first venture in Italy. His trompe-l’oeil desserts and viennoiserie run through every restaurant in the hotel.
05
The bars. The Palladio Bar for cocktails and wine. Elton’s Club after dinner, with live music. The Botanica Frollo Bar for rare spirits. Zitelle Bacaro on the Fondamenta for cicchetti and coffee facing St. Mark’s. And the Pool Bar.
What’s included

The inclusions are part of the magic

One of my favorite things about Airelles is how much is simply included in your stay. You stop signing for things, and the whole experience feels generous from the moment you arrive.

01
A fully included minibar. And they do not skimp: full bottles of wine, bottled cocktails, sweet and savory snacks, and a glass jar of candy, restocked daily and again at turndown. Nespresso and a selection of teas are in the room too.
02
Nightly gifts at turndown. A little surprise waits for you every evening when you come back to the room.
03
Daily breakfast. A full gourmet breakfast, overlooking the gardens or inside the historic rooms.
04
Poolside refreshments. Hot drinks and a curated selection of non-alcoholic drinks served around the pools throughout the day.
05
Laundry and luggage valet. Standard laundry for up to ten pieces per room, per day, and the staff will pack and unpack your suitcases for you.
06
The hotel boat. Frequent, on-demand shuttles across to St. Mark’s in about three to five minutes.
07
The spa, pools, gardens and kids club. Daily access to Spa Airelles by Guerlain, the indoor and outdoor pools and the gardens, plus a complimentary kids club for the little ones.
Rooms & suites

Which room to ask for

45 keys across three buildings: Palladio (23), Villa Frollo (10) and Conventino (12). See the map ↑

01
The Suite del Doge. The penthouse in Villa Frollo: 450 square meters, about 4,800 square feet, with four bedrooms. Villa Frollo can be privatized to 13 bedrooms. See the Suite del Doge →
02
Villa Mason, the three-bedroom suite with a private pool. Part of Conventino, with its own garden. Not a standalone villa; it connects to one of the larger historic buildings, but it is entirely private, with its own pool. The one I would book for a family, at approximately $15,000 to $25,000 per night.
03
Ask for the piano nobile. In any palazzo, I always want a room on the noble floor, one level above the ground floor, where the ceilings are much higher.

Know before you book

The fine print, from your advisor

01
You are on Giudecca, deliberately. The hotel boat makes the crossing in about five minutes. If you want to step out your door into the streets of Venice, look at Aman instead.
02
Stay four nights. Three is my sweet spot for Venice; at Airelles I could easily do four.
03
Book early for July and Biennale years. Redentore weekend in July puts the fireworks right over the Giudecca Canal, and Biennale years fill the city.
04
Transfers, arranged. I arrange the private water taxi from Marco Polo airport to the hotel dock, and private boats to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
05
Pair it with the Dolomites. Airelles pairs naturally with any of my Dolomites hotels: Forestis, Gardena Grödnerhof, COMO Alpina or Aman Rosa Alpina. The mountains are about two and a half to three hours away by private car, or a short helicopter hop, and Giudecca is a calm place to land before or after the peaks. My Dolomites guide →
Before you ask

The questions I get

Where is Airelles Palladio in Venice?

On Giudecca island, facing San Marco across the Giudecca Canal. The hotel boat reaches St. Mark’s in about five minutes.

How do I get to Airelles Palladio from the airport?

About 40 minutes by water taxi from Marco Polo Airport, straight to the hotel’s own landing. Book through me and stays of two nights or more include the one-way water taxi.

Does Airelles Palladio have a pool?

Yes, three: a 25-meter outdoor pool in the gardens, an 8-meter kids’ pool, and the indoor Domus pool in the three-level Guerlain spa.

Is Airelles Palladio good for families?

It is the best family hotel in Venice: pools, a kids club, gardens and a private three-bedroom suite with its own pool.

What is included at Airelles Palladio?

More than almost anywhere I know: the full minibar (wine, bottled cocktails, snacks and candy, restocked daily), nightly turndown gifts, daily breakfast, poolside drinks, laundry for up to ten pieces a day, luggage packing and unpacking, the hotel boat to San Marco, and access to the spa, pools and kids club.

Can I pair Airelles Palladio with the Dolomites?

Yes, and it’s one of my favorite Italy combinations. Airelles pairs naturally with Forestis, Gardena Grödnerhof, COMO Alpina or Aman Rosa Alpina. I arrange the private car, about two and a half to three hours, or a helicopter.

How many nights should I stay?

I could easily do four nights at Airelles. Three is my sweet spot for Venice elsewhere.
