The original Napa luxury property, perched on the Rutherford hillside — still the most romantic seat in the valley. My note beside it on The Fifteen names the three reasons: the terrace, the valley, the wine list.
Service at Aman standards — the single biggest separator in wine country — across around 40 spacious, private cottages tucked into a wooded estate above St. Helena. There really isn’t a bad room to be had.

Families are better matched elsewhere on my Napa & Sonoma list than at Auberge — the romance is the product. At Meadowood there’s a family pool, and it works well solo too. Both book through me at the same rate as direct, with the credits and extras layered on.
Auberge du Soleil can be summarized in six words and lose nothing: the terrace, the valley, the wine list. For the couple whose Napa is dinner above the valley as the light goes, it earned its seat on my honeymoon shortlist — the only Napa property that made it.
Meadowood is harder to put your finger on, and that’s the point: every time I go, I feel well taken care of, and I can’t say that about every property on my list. It’s the benchmark I measure the rest of wine country against. Honeymoon romance or the best-run house in the valley — tell me the occasion and I’ll tell you which.
