Only two American wine-country properties made The Fifteen — my shortlist of honeymoon hotels I’d book anywhere in the world. Auberge du Soleil carries the Napa flag at #14; Montage Healdsburg carries Sonoma’s at #15. This is how I split them.

The original Napa luxury property, perched on the Rutherford hillside — still the most romantic seat in the valley. My note beside it on The Fifteen names the three reasons: the terrace, the valley, the wine list.
Vineyard bungalows and a slower pace — waking up by your own fire pit overlooking the vines never gets old, and after twenty-plus stays it still hasn’t. The best restaurant view of any table on my list.

At Auberge, book the terrace with the room — the famous tables go as fast as the rooms do, so I reserve both together. Families are better matched elsewhere on my Napa & Sonoma list. Both are Fora / Virtuoso preferred partners: same rate as direct, credits and extras layered on.
Auberge du Soleil can be summarized in six words and lose nothing: the terrace, the valley, the wine list. For the couple who wants the classic Napa romance — dinner above the valley as the light goes — it’s still the most romantic seat in wine country.
Montage trades that elevation for intimacy with the vines themselves — the bungalow, the fire pit, the slower Healdsburg pace. It’s the hotel I’ve returned to more than any other, anywhere. Tell me your couple and I’ll tell you which.
