The Villas at Borgo Pignano

One of the best family villa stays in Tuscany: around nine private villas on a hilltop outside Volterra, with a full Relais & Châteaux hotel behind them.

I’ve slept here, not just toured it, and it’s the Tuscany estate I’d send a family to first.

Borgo Pignano is a villa and a small stone village on a hilltop outside Volterra, restored and run as one quiet estate. There’s no town to walk into and no crowd to work around, just the borgo, its gardens and the hills rolling away in every direction.

Around nine private villas are spread across the estate, from two to five bedrooms, so families and groups get their own house with the full hotel behind it. The kids get two pools plus their own kids’ pool and a tennis court, and the adults get a genuinely fantastic gym, a beautiful spa and dinner under the pergola.

That combination is what makes it work: the privacy of a villa rental, without having to staff it, stock it or cook in it unless you want to.

The questions I get

What is the best villa in Tuscany for families?

Borgo Pignano is one of my favorites. Around nine private villas, from two to five bedrooms, sit across a hilltop estate outside Volterra, so a family gets its own house with a full Relais & Châteaux hotel behind it: two pools plus a separate kids’ pool, tennis, a gym and a spa.

How many villas does Borgo Pignano have?

Around nine private villas spread across the estate, from two to five bedrooms. They vary in layout, privacy and view, so tell me who’s coming and I’ll match you to the right one.

Is Borgo Pignano good for kids?

Yes. Beyond the villas themselves, there are two pools plus a separate kids’ pool, a tennis court and plenty of room to roam. It’s a quiet country estate, so it suits families who want space and a slower pace.

Do you get hotel service in the villas?

Yes. You have your own house, with hotel service and every amenity a short walk away: the pools, the spa, the gym, tennis and dinner under the pergola.

Where is Borgo Pignano?

On a hilltop outside Volterra, about an hour and a half from Florence. It’s a bit remote, so you’ll want a car or a driver. Volterra and San Gimignano are within easy reach, and I arrange drivers who know the back roads.

How long should we stay?

At least two or three nights, so the pool, the dinners and the drives out don’t compete. Villa stays usually work best as the longer, slower part of an Italy trip.

Can we combine it with Florence?

Yes. Borgo Pignano also runs a Florence address, five minutes from the center. I’ve stayed at both and can pair the city with the countryside in one trip.

How much do the villas cost?

Rates depend on the villa, the season and the length of stay, so ask me for your dates and group size and I’ll come back with the right options.
