The new city house from the family behind Borgo Pignano: a contemporary borgo on the largest hotel grounds in Florence, five minutes from the center.

Borgo Pignano Florence is the new city house from the family behind Borgo Pignano, one of my favorite estates in Tuscany. It sits just outside the center, in much the same setting as Collegio alla Querce, and it stands on the largest piece of land of any hotel in Florence. A complimentary shuttle runs into town every hour, and the drive is about five minutes.

The original building holds most of the 33 rooms, and four to six new buildings around it are designed to blend in, which is where the borgo feel comes from. The design is contemporary, with beautiful marble throughout, and the rooms are all quite different from one another. The hardware and finishes are very high quality, the kind that will hold up over time.

I stayed shortly after opening. The team got me into my room within minutes of a very late arrival, with a plate of charcuterie, wine and water waiting, and pressing I sent down overnight came back first thing in the morning. They stay in touch over WhatsApp and answer fast. This is my pick for return visitors and anyone who values peace, quiet and space over stepping straight out into the streets.

The gym and the spa. A well-equipped gym with a squat rack, dumbbells to 34kg and cardio machines. The spa sits in the basement, with a shared steam room and sauna and a unique tunnel connected to it.

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

Ask for Vite. If you’re booking the entry category, Vite is the room I’d request. It’s a standalone building in its own private corner, and a good size for the category.

Main building over the villa. Five rooms sit in a separate villa by the entrance, which can be booked whole as a five-bedroom villa or used room by room when the main building is full. The rooms match the main building, but the villa is close to Via Bolognese and you’ll hear the road. I’d request the main building.

Book spa treatments early. There are only two treatment rooms. Tell me what you’d like and I’ll reserve it before you arrive.

Choosing between the hills hotels? It sits in the same price tier as Collegio alla Querce, which I’ve also stayed at. Villa San Michele is a category of its own. If you’d rather be in the center, look at Four Seasons Firenze.
