Corinthia or Hotel de la Ville?

A brand-new showstopper on a quiet square across from parliament, or an 18th-century Rocco Forte palazzo at the top of the Spanish Steps. Here is how I would choose.

Choose Corinthia

If you want quiet, space and a spa

Wow. A showstopper renovation, large rooms and a beautiful spa, in an area that is incredibly safe and quiet while still in the middle of everything. Truly a game changer for Rome.

The question behind the question

Do you want to come home to quiet, or to the Spanish Steps?

The Corinthia blew me away. It is across the street from parliament, so it is incredibly safe and quiet, and you are still in the middle of everything. The rooms are large, and the spa and public spaces are beautiful.

Hotel de la Ville is a nice hotel with a great rooftop and a spot at the top of the Spanish Steps. The top of the Steps is crowded from morning to night, so you trade quiet for the address.

If calm and space matter, pick the Corinthia. If the Steps and sunset drinks on Cielo are the point, pick the de la Ville.

The detail

What to know before you choose

Quiet or the Steps

The Corinthia is on Piazza del Parlamento: safe, quiet and walkable to everything. Like the Eden, it is central and still quiet, which is rare in Rome.

At Hotel de la Ville, you step out onto the top of the Spanish Steps. That’s the appeal, and also the crowds.

Rooms

Space is the story at the Corinthia. The rooms are large and tastefully appointed, with onyx and marble bathrooms, and some bedrooms open onto terraces. It is new, so book with someone who knows it.

Hotel de la Ville has 104 rooms and suites, some with terraces and city views, and marble bathrooms.

New or old

Hotel de la Ville is an 18th-century palazzo with colorful, very Roman interiors by Tommaso Ziffer: yellow walls, engravings, plaster reliefs and black and white floors.

The Corinthia is a grand new opening, and the renovation is a showstopper from the moment you walk in.

Spa and rooftop

Both have a spa. The Corinthia’s is beautiful, and the public spaces are big enough that the hotel never feels crowded. Hotel de la Ville has a Sicilian-inspired spa.

The rooftop is the de la Ville’s highlight: Cielo, a bar and restaurant across the top two floors, with views across Rome’s skyline.

Before you ask

The questions I get

Which is better, the Corinthia or Hotel de la Ville?

It depends on whether quiet or the Spanish Steps matter more. The Corinthia for large rooms, a beautiful spa and a quiet, safe street. Hotel de la Ville for the top of the Steps and the Cielo rooftop.

Which is quieter?

The Corinthia, across the street from parliament. Hotel de la Ville is at the top of the Spanish Steps, which are crowded from morning to night.

Which has the bigger rooms?

The Corinthia. Its rooms are large, which is rare in central Rome. At Hotel de la Ville, some rooms and suites have terraces and city views.

Where should I go for sunset drinks?

Cielo, the rooftop bar and restaurant at Hotel de la Ville, across the top two floors with views all over the city. It is the de la Ville’s highlight.

Is there another Rocco Forte to consider?

Yes. If you like the de la Ville, look at its sister, Hotel de Russie, a few minutes away. Its large courtyard, renovated rooms and spa with an indoor pool made it the stronger stay for me.

Still deciding?

Tell me your dates and who is coming, and I will tell you which one fits and which room to ask for.
