Hotel de la Ville review

Cielo Rooftop Bar And Restaurant Over Rome

Nice, with a great rooftop and a spot at the top of the Spanish Steps. But if you’re choosing between the Rocco Forte hotels in Rome, I prefer its sister, the de Russie.

Travelers who want the Spanish Steps on the doorstep and a rooftop for sunset drinks
The review

A nice Rocco Forte hotel at the top of the Spanish Steps, with a rooftop bar and restaurant, a courtyard and a spa, though I preferred its sister, the de Russie.

The Hotel de la Ville was nice. Honestly, I don’t have a ton to say about it, and I preferred its sister property, the Hotel de Russie.

It’s a Rocco Forte hotel on Via Sistina, right at the top of the Spanish Steps, in an 18th-century palazzo with colorful, very Roman interiors by Tommaso Ziffer. There are 104 rooms and suites, some with terraces and city views.

The highlights are Cielo, the rooftop bar and restaurant across the top two floors with views all over the city, Mosaico on the courtyard, the Julep cocktail bar, and a Sicilian-inspired spa.

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
I prefer the de Russie. Same family, a few minutes away. The de Russie’s large courtyard, renovated rooms and spa with an indoor pool made it the stronger stay for me.
02
It’s a busy area. The top of the Spanish Steps is crowded from morning to night. For quiet, the Eden is a short walk away on a calm residential street.
03
Compare the rest of Rome. The Hassler next door for tradition, the Bulgari for big rooms and energy, and Casa Monti for something younger and more fun.
04
Transfers and drivers, arranged. I arrange private transfers from Fiumicino or Termini station, drivers for days outside the city, and onward travel by fast train or car to Florence, Naples or the Amalfi Coast.
