Hotel de la Ville or Casa Monti?

Both love color, both eat on the roof, and both have a spa. One is a Rocco Forte palazzo at the top of the Spanish Steps; the other is a hip boutique hotel in Monti. Here is how I would choose.

Visited both · October 2026

Choose Hotel de la Ville

If you want the Spanish Steps

A nice Rocco Forte in an 18th-century palazzo with colorful, very Roman interiors, right at the top of the Steps, with Cielo on the roof for sunset drinks.

Choose Casa Monti

If you want something younger and more fun

So cute. A boutique hotel from the team behind Le Fantaisie in Paris, with real trattorias all around, a beautiful rooftop and a spa couples can have to themselves.

Work with me and you get Fora perks, plus someone who knows these hotels personally and personalizes your stay: I match you to the right room at the de la Ville, book the Casa Monti spa just for the two of you, and arrange your transfers from Fiumicino or Termini. Same rate as booking direct.

The question behind the question

You like color. Do you want it at the top of the Steps, or down in Monti?

Hotel de la Ville is a Rocco Forte palazzo with colorful, very Roman interiors. You get the top of the Spanish Steps and Cielo, the rooftop bar and restaurant with views all over the city. You also get the crowds, from morning to night.

Casa Monti is the one I send people to when they want something younger and more fun. It is a really great boutique hotel in the center of Rome, with authentic trattorias all around.

If the Spanish Steps and a sunset on Cielo are the dream, pick the de la Ville. If you are a younger couple who wants a hip hotel in a real neighborhood, pick Casa Monti.

The detail

What to know before you choose

A Hotel de la Ville salon with yellow walls hung with engravings, teal damask curtains and a black and white marble floor

Two ways with color

Hotel de la Ville’s interiors, by Tommaso Ziffer, are colorful and very Roman: yellow walls, engravings, plaster reliefs and black and white floors, in an 18th-century palazzo.

Casa Monti is from the same company as Le Fantaisie in Paris, and it shows: super cool patterns, pattern on pattern, and curtains that hide the TV.

The neighborhood

Casa Monti is in Monti, and the neighborhood is the real thing. When I visited on a Sunday, real Romans were having lunch at the trattorias all around it.

Hotel de la Ville is right at the top of the Spanish Steps, which is crowded from morning to night. For quiet near the Steps, the Eden is a short walk away.

Rooftops and restaurants

The highlight at Hotel de la Ville is Cielo, the rooftop bar and restaurant across the top two floors, with views across Rome’s skyline. Mosaico, the main restaurant, opens onto the courtyard, and there is the Julep cocktail bar.

Casa Monti has a beautiful rooftop restaurant and a lively restaurant downstairs.

Spas

At Casa Monti, couples can book the spa just for the two of them. I arrange it before you arrive, so it is set for your stay.

Hotel de la Ville has a Sicilian-inspired spa. For an indoor pool, its sister, the de Russie, has one.

Before you ask

The questions I get

Which is better, Hotel de la Ville or Casa Monti?

It depends on the trip. Hotel de la Ville for the top of the Spanish Steps and the Cielo rooftop. Casa Monti for younger couples who want something hip, young and fun, with real trattorias all around.

Which is better for a honeymoon?

For younger honeymooners, Casa Monti, and book the spa just for the two of you.

Which has the better rooftop?

Hotel de la Ville’s Cielo is its highlight, across the top two floors with views all over the city. Casa Monti has a beautiful rooftop restaurant too.

Which has a spa?

Both. Hotel de la Ville has a Sicilian-inspired spa. Casa Monti’s spa can be booked just for the two of you.

I like the de la Ville. Anything similar?

Its sister, Hotel de Russie, a few minutes away. I prefer it: the large courtyard, renovated rooms and spa with an indoor pool made it the stronger stay.
