Suite del Doge

450 m² · About 4,800 Sq Ft · 4 Bedrooms · Villa Frollo Buyout Up To 13 Bedrooms

The finest suite I have seen in Venice, inside what is, for me, the number one hotel in Italy. Five minutes from St. Mark’s by boat, and a world away from the crowds.

The review

The most spectacular hotel I toured in Venice, and its most spectacular suite.

I toured four of Venice’s top hotels in one day in October 2026: the Four Seasons Danieli, Aman Venice, Orient Express Palazzo Donà Giovannelli and Airelles Palladio. Airelles was the most spectacular of the four. For me it is the number one hotel in Italy right now, and one of the most beautiful properties I have ever seen.

The Suite del Doge is the crown of it. It fills the heart of Villa Frollo, one of the historic buildings on the Airelles estate on Giudecca: 450 square meters, about 4,800 square feet, with four bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, frescoed walls, soaring ceilings and antiques chosen piece by piece. The salon opens onto a stone balcony with Santa Maria della Salute framed dead center across the water.

What makes it work is the setting. You are five minutes by boat from St. Mark’s, but you come home to gardens, a private arrival and genuine quiet in one of the busiest cities in the world. Private and secure, and yet the hotel itself is lively, social and fun. Sophisticated, never stuffy.

Inside the suite

What you get in 4,800 square feet

01
Four bedrooms, eight guests. Room for a multigenerational family or two couples traveling together, with a full living room and kitchen so the suite works like a private Venetian apartment.
02
The view. The salon looks across the Giudecca Canal to the Salute, and the suite takes in San Marco and the Doge’s Palace beyond. It is the postcard, without the crowds under your window.
03
Frescoes and antiques. This is a palazzo interior, not a hotel interpretation of one. Painted ceilings, wall frescoes, old master style paintings and period furniture throughout.
04
What is included. Signature breakfast, a sweet and savory minibar, unpacking and packing, a daily laundry allowance, access to the Guerlain spa, drinks by the pools and the Kids Club for children.
Take the whole villa

Villa Frollo, privatized

01
Up to 13 bedrooms. Villa Frollo can be privatized in full: the Suite del Doge plus the surrounding rooms, for up to 13 bedrooms under one roof.
02
A private restaurant downstairs. A full buyout includes the formal restaurant on the ground floor, so dinners in the villa are yours alone. Think milestone birthdays, anniversaries, a wedding weekend or a family reunion.
03
Rates on request. Buyouts are quoted per stay and there is room to shape them around your dates and group. Send me the occasion and the headcount and I will come back with options.
Around the suite

Why Airelles Palladio is my number one in Italy

01
The arrival. You come in by water to a private landing on Giudecca, and the reveal of the gardens is one of the great hotel arrivals in Europe.
02
A three-story spa. Spa Airelles by Guerlain is remarkable: three floors, with an indoor pool under timber galleries and brick walls.
03
The outdoor pool and gardens. A long stone-edged pool set in nearly a hectare of walled gardens, with lavender lawns and pergolas. Space that physically does not exist across the water in San Marco.
04
Four restaurants, four bars. Plus a library I could have stayed in all afternoon. In October it was lively but never loud.
05
The worry that never came true. I expected Giudecca to feel isolated. It does not. The hotel boat makes the crossing in about five minutes, and having a calm side of the water to come back to is the luxury.

For families

The smaller private option

01
A three-bedroom suite with a private pool. I toured it as well. It is not a standalone villa; it connects to one of the larger historic buildings, but it is entirely private, with its own pool and three bedrooms. It is the one I would book for a family, at approximately $15,000 to $25,000 per night.
Know before you book

The fine print, from your advisor

01
Not on the Grand Canal, deliberately. Giudecca faces Venice rather than sitting in it. I would argue that is the selling point: real peace in a very touristy city, five minutes from everything.
02
Book early for July and Biennale years. Redentore weekend in July puts the fireworks right over the Giudecca Canal, and Biennale years fill the city. The Suite del Doge is a single key, so dates go first.
03
Rates are a guide. From approximately $50,000 per night for the Suite del Doge, varying by season and length of stay. I confirm exact rates and what is included before you commit.
04
Transfers, arranged. I arrange the private water taxi from Marco Polo airport to the hotel dock, plus private boats to Murano, Burano and Torcello.
