Castelfalfi review

146 Rooms · A Modern Resort In A Restored Tuscan Borgo · Great For Families

A polished, modern resort in the Tuscan countryside, and a fantastic choice for families and for couples who want a resort-style stay. If an authentic, historic borgo is the point of your trip, I’d point you to Borgo Pignano, Borgo San Felice or Il Borro instead.

The review

A modern resort with big views, big pools and something for everyone in the family.

I stayed at Castelfalfi for a night in September 2026. It’s a large, modern resort on a hilltop estate near Montaione, beside a restored medieval borgo with its own castle, and it’s run with real polish.

The design is very modern. I personally love the style, but it’s worth knowing before you book: the main building feels more like a contemporary resort than a historic Tuscan borgo. It’s worth deciding whether that’s the feel you want for your trip.

What it does brilliantly is resort life. There’s a huge main pool, a stunning spa with an infinity pool looking out over the valley, four restaurants, a kids club and lots of room configurations for families. Service across the board was fantastic, and every guest I spoke to raved about their stay.

It’s a lively place, too. On my last evening the outdoor terrace was packed with couples watching the sunset, from honeymooners to an older couple on their fifth night. If you want that energy in the Tuscan countryside, you’ll love it here.

What stood out

The details that made the list

01
Built for families. A kids club, lots of family room configurations and beautiful villas in the borgo itself. A great alternative for families who don’t want to pay Rosewood, COMO or Belmond prices.
02
The pools and spa. The main pool is enormous, and the spa’s infinity pool over the valley is stunning.
03
Four restaurants. Including one inside the old castle in the borgo, which is really unique, plus dining at the main pool. I had dinner at the casual Italian restaurant, a four-minute walk away: beautiful, and the pizza was great.
04
The views. Many rooms look out over the countryside.
05
The service. Fantastic across the board, and consistently polished.
06
The location. A great base between Florence, Pisa and Siena, with lots to do nearby and on the property.
Know before you book

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
Book a room with a terrace. I was in a Prestige Belvedere room: well appointed, with a lovely view, but no terrace or outdoor space. Next time I’d book a room with a terrace.
02
Or ask about the Tabaccaia. The entry-level rooms in the Tabaccaia, the historic building across the street, have the charm of the old building. If character matters more than space, they’re a lovely choice.
03
Families: look at the villas. The villas in the borgo are fantastic for families and groups who want their own space with the resort on hand.
04
It’s lively. The terrace fills up at sunset, and the borgo gets busy with day visitors, especially on weekends. For something quieter and more romantic, look at Borgo Pignano, Borgo San Felice or Il Borro.
05
Modern, not historic. If an authentic historic borgo stay is what you’re after, one of those three will suit you better. If a modern resort with big pools is exactly what you want, Castelfalfi is a strong choice.
06
Sunday market. On Sundays, local producers sell their goods along the walk up into the borgo. Worth timing a morning for.
