A highlight of my time in Florence: a small hotel on the Arno where the service makes you feel genuinely valued, and the Ponte Vecchio fills the window.

The review

The service took a weight off my shoulders.

The day before I checked in, I broke my camera’s SD card. I was in Florence for work and could not afford to lose a day of photos, so at check-in I mentioned it and asked where I might find a replacement. The team did not hand me directions. They went out, bought one themselves, and had it in my hands within the hour.

I was incredibly busy that week, and that one gesture took a huge weight off my shoulders. It was not a one-off, either. The service was outstanding across the board: warm, quick and personal, but never hovering.

Some of that comes down to size. With only 37 rooms and suites, the team knows who you are, and Portrait is simply a place where you feel valued. Then there are the views. The Ponte Vecchio is right outside, and from the river-view suites you watch it change color from morning to night.

The design is modern and art-forward, with mid-century Italian pieces, framed photography and a lot of warm wood, and Ferragamo is around the corner. You are in the most central spot in the city, yet it was quiet at night. For a city hotel in Florence, it is just fantastic.

What stood out

Why it was a highlight

01
Service that solves problems. The SD card story says it all. They do not point you somewhere, they take care of it.
02
The Ponte Vecchio, from your room. The river-view suites look straight at the bridge. It is stunning at sunrise and again when it lights up at night.
03
Italian design, done with confidence. Modern, art-forward and very Florentine, with mid-century furniture and photography on the walls. Ferragamo’s flagship and museum are around the corner.
04
Terraces worth asking for. Some of the suites have massive private terraces over the Arno. In a city this dense, that is rare.
05
Central, yet quiet at night. You can walk everywhere, and the rooms settle down once the day crowds leave the bridge.
06
Seamless, even without a gym. There is no gym, but the hotel will bring weights and a mat to your room. Everything is truly seamless here.
Know before you book

The fine print, from your advisor

01
Ask for a river view. That is the whole point of Portrait. The other rooms are lovely, but the Arno is why you come.
02
Terraces are limited. Only some suites have them, and the big ones go first. Tell me early if a terrace matters and I will request the right suite.
03
It is a city hotel. There is no gym, so workouts happen in your suite. If a pool, a spa or a garden is on the list, look at Four Seasons Firenze.
04
Families fit well. Two-bedroom suites and a Family Suite make it one of the easier city hotels in Florence for families, and it is pet friendly.
05
Dinner is downstairs. Caffè dell’Oro, the hotel’s restaurant, sits beside the Ponte Vecchio. Ask for a window table at night.
Before you ask

The questions I get

Where is Portrait Firenze?

On Lungarno degli Acciaiuoli, right on the Arno, a few steps from the Ponte Vecchio. Ferragamo’s flagship and museum are around the corner.

How many rooms does Portrait Firenze have?

37 rooms and suites, most of them suites, many with views of the river and the Ponte Vecchio.

Does Portrait Firenze have a gym?

No. The hotel will bring weights and a mat to your room instead, and it arrives without any fuss.

Is Portrait Firenze quiet at night?

In my experience, yes. You are in the most central spot in Florence, but the rooms were quiet once the day crowds left the bridge.

Which room should I ask for?

A river view, always. That is the reason to be here. Some suites also have very large private terraces, and I can tell you which ones.

Is Portrait Firenze good for families?

Yes, for a city hotel. There are two-bedroom suites and a Family Suite, and the hotel is pet friendly.

Who owns Portrait Firenze?

The Lungarno Collection, the Ferragamo family’s hotel group, which also runs Hotel Lungarno across the river and Portrait hotels in Rome and Milan.
