Head-to-head · Lake Como
Ten minutes apart by boat and nothing alike. Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como. Passalacqua is a whimsical 18th-century villa you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Both are built for couples, and the right one depends on how you want the trip to feel.

The best true lakefront hotel on the lake: glass, walnut and stone by Patricia Urquiola, every room looking at the water, a heated pool, a hot tub in the old boathouse and almost no day visitors. The Grand Suite costs about what an entry room does at Passalacqua.

A whimsical 1787 villa in Moltrasio that’s meant to feel like your home, filled with antiques the family collected over time and lots of wicker. Only hotel guests can use the restaurants and spa, so it’s peaceful, private and truly exclusive.

Passalacqua is unlike anywhere else in the world. It’s whimsical, the idea is that it’s your home, and because only hotel guests can use the restaurants and spa, it feels genuinely exclusive. It’s peaceful and calm, the spa is beautiful, and the tennis court is one of the most iconic anywhere. Moltrasio is a quiet village with no tourists, which is lovely, but there isn’t much to do there.
Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como. Every room looks at the water, the pool is heated and on land, and I couldn’t find a single fault when I stayed. It’s private and quiet in a different way: modern, calm and right on the lake.
And if you can’t choose, don’t. The two hotels are almost directly across the water from each other. Two nights at each, with a ten-minute private boat in between, is the trip I’d book for a honeymoon. Here’s the Passalacqua + Il Sereno pairing.
Both, for different couples. Passalacqua is a couple’s retreat. The hotel says it’s family friendly, but I’d book it for honeymooners, or for two couples traveling together. Il Sereno is for the couple who wants to be on the water with a great pool and a very good bed.
If the budget allows, split the trip. Two or three nights at each gives you two honeymoons in one, and the move between them is a ten-minute boat ride.
Il Sereno sits right on the water, and every room looks at the lake. It’s the best true lakefront hotel on Como.
Passalacqua is a terraced garden property. It has some lake-view rooms, but most rooms, even in the Palazzo, look over the gardens to the lake in the distance rather than straight onto the water. If the view matters most, ask me for a lakeside room.
At Il Sereno, entry rooms get a partial view, some through the trees. The Grand Suite is where it gets special, with the head-on view and a private terrace.
At Passalacqua, the rooms in the Palazzo and the lakeside rooms are generously sized. Rooms elsewhere on the property can be a bit small. The Junior Suite Al Lago is the one I show couples first, and with so few rooms, it’s the hardest confirmation on the lake.
Passalacqua has only two restaurants, so plan to eat off property some nights. By boat is the best way to do it, and I can arrange it. Its spa is Moroccan-inspired, with vaulted ceilings, old stone columns, pierced brass lanterns and peacock wicker chairs, and an underground tunnel connects it to the lower gardens, which I loved. One small thing: clients who stayed recently found the pool service slow and had to flag someone down to order.
Il Sereno has a Michelin restaurant on the water, its own fleet of Riva boats for dinners elsewhere, and a hot tub in the old boathouse that you can book privately by the hour.
They’re different. Passalacqua is a whimsical 18th-century villa that feels like your own home, and only hotel guests can get in. Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como, modern and private, with lake views from every room. Or split your stay between them.
Generally, no. The restaurants and spa are for hotel guests only. If you’re a client of mine staying nearby, or Passalacqua is sold out for your dates, I can sometimes arrange a lunch or a tour.
No. A handful of lakeside rooms look out over the water, but most rooms look over the terraced gardens to the lake in the distance. Every room at Il Sereno sees the lake.
Generally, yes. Il Sereno’s Grand Suite starts around what an entry room costs at Passalacqua. Rates change by season, so ask me for your dates.
Yes, and it’s the trip I recommend for honeymoons. They are about ten minutes apart by private boat. See my Passalacqua + Il Sereno pairing.
Not really. Passalacqua says it’s family friendly, but to me it’s a couple’s retreat, and Il Sereno is built for couples too. For a family trip, I’d look at Grand Hotel Tremezzo or the Mandarin Oriental.
Tell me your dates and I’ll tell you which one fits. Work with me and you get Fora perks, plus someone who knows the hotels personally and personalizes your stay. Same rate as booking direct.
