The best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como — Patricia Urquiola’s glass and walnut, a heated pool, a boathouse hot tub and its own fleet of Rivas.

I stayed at Il Sereno in October 2026, and I truly couldn’t find one fault with anything. The service, the food, the views, the room, the privacy — it all just works. I don’t usually love modern hotels in Italy, but this one is done exactly right.

It opened in 2016 and was refreshed in the last few years. Patricia Urquiola’s design has a Japanese-minimalist, warm-industrial feel: glass, walnut and stone, with a listening suite that reminded me of the best hi-fi bars in the US. It’s the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como — the building sits right on the water, and every room has a lake view.

Torno is a tiny village, and you can only get into the hotel if you’re staying or arrive by boat, so there are almost no day visitors. That’s the point: it’s private, calm and built for couples. When you want to go out, the hotel’s own Rivas make dinner across the lake easy. And one thing I can’t stop thinking about: the sheets. The softest I’ve ever slept on.

The details that made the list

The best true lakefront hotel on the lake. The building sits right on the water and every room looks at the lake, which is rarer on Como than you’d think.

The heated pool. Built on land just above the water, so it never rocks with boat wakes the way Como’s floating pools do, and the poolside service is excellent.

The hot tub in the old boathouse. Book it privately, by the hour. It’s one of the most romantic hours you can have on the lake.

Its own fleet of Rivas. The dock is the front door. Bellagio, Como and dinners across the lake are a boat ride away.

The sheets. The softest I’ve ever slept on. It sounds small; it isn’t.

The magic starts at the Grand Suite. Every room sees the lake, but entry rooms get a partial view, some through the trees. The Grand Suite Lago adds the head-on view and a private terrace, and it starts at about what an entry room costs at Passalacqua. The Garden Lake View Suite is larger but sees the lake at an angle — my Lake Como proposal breaks down both.

Modern is the point. If your Como dream is frescoes and history, that's Villa d'Este or Passalacqua — this is the lake for design lovers. Or have both: two nights at Passalacqua, then ten minutes across the water to here.

Couples, not families. It’s not a family hotel. I’d only send families with older teenagers who are happy by the pool. For a family trip on the lake, look at Grand Hotel Tremezzo or the Mandarin Oriental.

Torno is quiet. There’s not much going on in the village. If you want a lively base, stay in Bellagio, Como or Tremezzo instead — or stay here and go out by boat.

Watch for suite offers. Il Sereno runs genuine promotions on its larger suites more often than its neighbors — I time bookings to catch them.

Boats and transfers, arranged. I arrange the private car from Milan, about an hour, and private boats for anything beyond the hotel’s own Rivas: a full day on the lake, lunch in Bellagio, or the ten-minute crossing to Passalacqua. I work with the best captains on Como, at fair prices.
