Head-to-head · Lake Como

The EDITION or Il Sereno?

Lake Como’s two modern hotels, and I stayed at both. The EDITION is big, lively and social, with a superb spa and gym. Il Sereno is small, private and the best true lakefront hotel on the lake. Same design language, completely different stays.

Choose the EDITION

If you want a scene

A lively 148-room EDITION in Cadenabbia, next door to Grand Hotel Tremezzo, with an excellent spa and one of the best hotel gyms I’ve seen. Book a lake-view room on the third floor or above.

Choose Il Sereno

If you want privacy

The best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como. A small, quiet hotel in Torno by Patricia Urquiola, with every room facing the water, a heated pool, a boathouse hot tub, its own Riva boats and almost no day visitors. It costs more, and it feels like it.

The question behind the question

A scene, or a hideaway?

The EDITION is a neat hotel, but it isn’t for everyone. It’s lively and social, the spa and gym are outstanding, and the two-bedroom suite is good value for a family. Book a lake-view room on the third floor or above, and know that dining on property is limited and there’s no town at the door.

Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como. I couldn’t find a single fault when I stayed: the design, the heated pool, the private hot tub in the old boathouse, the quality of every detail. Because Torno is tiny and the hotel is reachable only by its guests or by boat, it never feels busy.

If you want energy and a great gym, choose the EDITION. If you want the hotel to be the reason you came, choose Il Sereno.

The detail

What to know before you choose

Two kinds of modern

The EDITION is modern and social, the way the brand is everywhere: white, neutrals, green marble and arches, its signature Le Labo scent, and a lively bar and pool. The crowd is younger and mostly American.

Il Sereno is modern in a quieter way. The feel is Japanese-minimalist and warm-industrial, with glass, walnut and stone, and there’s even a listening suite. It’s designed for couples who want calm.

Mid-lake or near Como?

The EDITION is in Cadenabbia, next door to Grand Hotel Tremezzo, where you can walk for meals. There’s little else nearby, but Bellagio and Varenna are a short boat ride away.

Il Sereno is in Torno, near the southern end of the lake and about an hour from Milan. The hotel’s own boats make dinners across the lake easy.

Which room to book

At the EDITION, book a lake-view room on the third floor or above. Lower floors sit above the loud casual restaurant, and non-lake-view rooms face the spa across the street or an interior courtyard. A non-lake-view booking won’t be upgraded to a lake view without a paid supplement.

At Il Sereno, every room sees the lake, but entry rooms get a partial view, some through the trees. The Grand Suite is where it gets special.

Arriving at the EDITION

The road up from the town of Como takes 45 minutes to an hour. I arrange a private car from Milan to the water in Como, then a private boat to the hotel’s dock. I arrived at the EDITION this way, and it’s the arrival I recommend.

Before you ask

The questions I get

Which is better, the Lake Como EDITION or Il Sereno?

They suit different travelers. The EDITION is lively and social, with an excellent spa and gym. Il Sereno is private and quiet, the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como, with exceptional quality throughout. Choose by whether you want a scene or a hideaway.

Where is the Lake Como EDITION?

In Cadenabbia, in the middle of the lake on the west shore, right next door to Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

Which rooms should I book at the EDITION?

A lake-view room on the third floor or above. Lower floors sit above the loud casual restaurant, and non-lake-view rooms face the spa across the street or an interior courtyard.

Will the EDITION upgrade me to a lake view?

The hotel told me a non-lake-view booking won’t be upgraded to a lake view without a paid supplement. A standard lake-view booking can be upgraded to a lake-view loft or suite.

Which is quieter?

Il Sereno, by a wide margin. Torno is a tiny village, and the hotel can only be reached by guests or by boat.

Which is better for a honeymoon?

Il Sereno, for most couples. For an even bigger honeymoon, pair it with Passalacqua across the water. See my Passalacqua + Il Sereno pairing.
