Four Seasons Napa Valley or Montage Healdsburg?

#02 and #03 on my Napa & Sonoma ranking — one at genuine Four Seasons standard inside a working Calistoga vineyard, the other my most-returned-to hotel anywhere, twenty-plus stays in. They’re in different valleys, and they answer different trips.

Choose Four Seasons

If the trip is a group

The rare wine-country hotel that fits families, couples, girls trips, and multi-couple groups equally well — gorgeous pools, a one-star Michelin restaurant in the vineyard, and service at genuine Four Seasons standard on every stay I’ve had.

Choose Montage

If it’s the two of you and the vines

Waking up and sitting by your own fire pit overlooking the vineyards never gets old — and after twenty-plus stays, it still hasn’t. Just outside downtown Healdsburg, with a complimentary shuttle to the plaza and the best restaurant view on my list.

Both are Fora / Virtuoso preferred partners — and Four Seasons Napa runs third- or fourth-night-free offers through partner channels that meaningfully change the math on longer stays. Also know what you’re choosing geographically: Healdsburg is Sonoma, not Napa — more relaxed, less commercial, and my own preference.

The question behind the question

Groups go to Calistoga; couples go to Healdsburg.

Four Seasons Napa Valley earned its spot the boring way: consistency. Since they worked out the early kinks, service has been at genuine Four Seasons standard on every stay, and it’s a property that genuinely lends itself to a large swath of people — which is rare at this level.

Montage is the one I keep going back to — at least twenty stays over the past few years, more than any other hotel on my list. Twenty stays in, I notice small things a first-timer wouldn’t, and the team always makes them right. Book the vineyard room; the mountain and oak categories are lovely but miss the signature view.
