Grand Hotel Tremezzo or the EDITION?

Next-door neighbors in Tremezzina, and two very different hotels. Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a colorful 1910 grand hotel; the EDITION is a 148-room modern hotel in a converted building. Lake-view rooms cost about the same at both, so the question is which experience you want.

Choose Grand Hotel Tremezzo

My pick of the two

Tiered gardens with a beautiful pool, five restaurants, a clay court, and lake-view junior suites with balconies. Even its garden-view rooms look onto genuinely pretty gardens. If you can find availability, I’d book here.

If you really want modern

A lively, social EDITION with an excellent spa and one of the best hotel gyms I’ve seen. Book a lake-view room on the third floor or above, and the two-bedroom suite is good value for families.

The question behind the question

Why I’d book Grand Hotel Tremezzo

These two sit side by side, and their lake-view rooms cost about the same. At that price, Grand Hotel Tremezzo gives you more: tiered gardens, five restaurants, a beautiful garden pool and lake-view junior suites that feel like they sit on the water. Even its garden-view rooms are lovely, while the EDITION’s non-lake-view rooms face the spa or an interior courtyard.

The EDITION is the right choice if you really want a modern hotel. It’s lively and social, the spa and gym are outstanding, and its two-bedroom suite is good value for a family. Book a lake-view room on the third floor or above.

If Grand Hotel Tremezzo is available, I’d book it. If you stay at the EDITION, walk next door for some of your meals.

The detail

What to know before you choose

A lake-view suite at Grand Hotel Tremezzo with a terrace over Lake Como

Same price, different experience

Lake-view rooms at the two hotels are priced about the same. The difference is what surrounds them: Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s gardens, pools and five restaurants, or the EDITION’s spa, gym and lively social scene.

The rooms to book

At Grand Hotel Tremezzo, book a junior suite or above with a lake view and balcony; garden-view rooms are a good cheaper option.

At the EDITION, book a lake-view room on the third floor or above. Below that you’re over the loud casual restaurant, and non-lake-view rooms are dark and face the spa or a courtyard. Upgrades from non-lake-view to lake-view rooms require a paid supplement.

The crowd

Grand Hotel Tremezzo has a more refined crowd, but it welcomes outside guests, and its lower floating pool attracts plenty of day visitors and people filming. The garden pool and indoor-outdoor pool stay calm and private.

The EDITION feels like West Hollywood on Lake Como: young, social and mostly American. If that isn’t your scene, stay next door.

Getting there

The road up from the town of Como takes 45 minutes to an hour. I arrange a private car from Milan to the water in Como, then a private boat to the hotel’s dock. I arrived at the EDITION this way, and it’s the arrival I recommend for both hotels.

Before you ask

The questions I get

Which is better, Grand Hotel Tremezzo or the Lake Como EDITION?

For most travelers, Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Lake-view rooms cost about the same at both, and Grand Hotel Tremezzo offers gardens, five restaurants and better views from its cheaper rooms. Choose the EDITION if you specifically want a modern, social hotel with a serious spa and gym.

Are Grand Hotel Tremezzo and the EDITION next to each other?

Yes. They sit side by side on the west shore in Tremezzina, and you can walk between them for meals.

Which rooms should I avoid at the EDITION?

Non-lake-view rooms, which face the spa across the street or an interior courtyard, and lake-view rooms below the third floor, which sit above the loud casual restaurant.

Is the Lake Como EDITION good for families?

Its two-bedroom suite, at around $5,500 a night, is good value for a family compared with other options on the lake.

How do you get to Grand Hotel Tremezzo and the EDITION?

I recommend a private car from Milan to the town of Como, then a private boat to the hotel. The road from Como takes 45 minutes to an hour.
