A neat, modern hotel that isn’t for everyone, but is right for a lot of travelers. Book a lake-view room on the third floor or above. If you’d rather have a classic grand hotel at a similar price, Grand Hotel Tremezzo next door is my pick.

A 148-room modern hotel in a converted lakefront building next door to Grand Hotel Tremezzo — lively, wellness-focused and unmistakably EDITION.

I stayed at the Lake Como EDITION in October 2026, its opening year, to understand exactly who it’s for. Whether or not it’s your style, it is a hotel for a lot of travelers, and with the right room category it’s a genuinely distinctive offering on the lake.

EDITION took over a former hotel in Cadenabbia, right next door to Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and turned it into a 148-room modern hotel. Inside it’s white, neutral and calm, with beautiful green marble, arches, the brand’s signature wood and plenty of its Le Labo scent; you know you’re in an EDITION the moment you walk in. The exterior keeps the original building, so from outside you wouldn’t guess how modern it is, and it lacks the wow factor of Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Passalacqua, Villa d’Este or Villa Serbelloni.

The atmosphere is what you’d expect from EDITION: lively, social and see-and-be-seen, closer in mood to West Hollywood or Mykonos than to a classic Como villa. It suits younger travelers, a mostly American crowd and LGBTQ+ travelers especially well. If that isn’t your scene, you’ll be happier at Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Il Sereno or Passalacqua.

What stood out

The details that made the list

The spa. Excellent, with a long list of rooms: three saunas, a steam room, an indoor heated pool and more. The hotel is leaning into wellness, and it shows.

The gym. One of the best hotel gyms I’ve seen: free weights up to 40 kilos, a squat rack, plenty of machines and cardio. Serious lifters will be happy here.

The design. White, neutrals, green marble, arches and EDITION’s signature wood. Bright and calm, especially in the penthouses — I loved the arches and light in Penthouse 1.

The two-bedroom suite. The real star for families. At around $5,500 a night, it’s good value compared with the alternatives on the lake for a family sharing one suite.

Service that found its feet. Lunch by the pool started slowly in the mid-afternoon, then became consistently solid, which was better than I expected from earlier reviews.
Know before you book

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

Book a lake view, on the third floor or above. Below the third floor, lake-view rooms sit right above the casual restaurant, which is loud into the evening. Non-lake-view rooms face either the spa across the street or an interior courtyard, and they’re likely dark; unlike at Villa d’Este, Passalacqua or Grand Hotel Tremezzo, there’s no pretty garden view to fall back on.

Don’t count on a view upgrade. The hotel told me directly that a non-lake-view booking won’t be upgraded to a lake view; that takes a paid supplement. A standard lake-view booking can be upgraded to a lake-view loft or suite, so it’s the better starting point.

Dining is limited. There are three or four outlets, all on the expensive side, and the casual and in-room menus are short; there’s no pizza, for example. Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a short walk away for meals, and a boat opens up Bellagio, Varenna and the smaller restaurants I like on the lake, such as Silvio, Crotto del Misto and Locanda La Tirlindana.

There’s no town at the door. There isn’t much within walking distance. If you want a town right outside, Villa d’Este in Cernobbio is the better choice. Bellagio is a short boat ride away, but it’s very crowded, even in October.

Some early wear. In a hotel this new, I noticed a loose floorboard, chipped paint and a loose door handle in one suite. Small things, but surprising this early. By comparison, everything at Il Sereno was of exceptional quality.

One pool, for now. There’s one pool, floating on the lake. I’m not a fan of floating pools, which move with the water. A second pool, above a new restaurant next door, is planned for next season.

Allow time at checkout. I asked for my luggage and car at 6:40 a.m. and left at 7:10. If you have a train or flight to catch, build in extra time.

Book boats through me, not the concierge. The hotel has no boats of its own, and the concierge team is still finding its footing with boats and transfers. For a transfer, a boat day or dinner across the lake, ask me instead. I book Como’s best boat partners for my clients all the time, at much fairer prices.

Arrive by boat. The EDITION is a long way up the lake — add about 45 minutes by road from the town of Como. I arrived by private boat from Como instead, and it was a great way to arrive. It’s the arrival I recommend for the EDITION, Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Villa Serbelloni; for Passalacqua, Villa d’Este, the Mandarin Oriental and Il Sereno, a car from Milan makes more sense.
