Aman Rosa Alpina review

The most luxurious hotel in the Dolomites, in a fantastic spot for hiking and skiing, and as good for families as it is for couples. Come for the suites, not for the dramatic views.

The review

A beautiful Aman restoration of the old Rosa Alpina, built around its suites.

Aman Rosa Alpina is a beautiful restoration of the former Rosa Alpina in San Cassiano, and the location is fantastic for hiking and skiing nearby. It’s equally good for families and couples, which isn’t always true of an Aman.

The design is very Aman, with lots of wood and marble, and the stars are the suites, with beautiful views of the forest, the village and the mountains above. You won’t get the dramatic panoramas you’d have at Forestis, COMO Alpina or Miramonti (or Lefay, which I didn’t visit but hear fantastic things about) — the views here are more intimate.

San Cassiano was a ghost town when I visited in October, but I could see it buzzing in winter and summer. Service in the lobby restaurant was fantastic.

Two small things surprised me. Some of the original walls of the former hotel are noticeable and not the most luxurious looking. It’s not a reason not to book, but by comparison Gardena Grödnerhof did an incredible job restoring its original building. And our arrival was a little awkward: the valet didn’t really acknowledge us or lead us to reception. I’m not sure what caused it, and everything after was excellent.

What stood out

The details that made the list

01
The suites. The best rooms in the hotel, with beautiful views of the forest, village and peaks.
02
The location for skiing and hiking. It isn’t ski-in, ski-out, but there’s a ski room and the lifts are about two minutes away by shuttle.
03
Families and couples alike. A true luxury hotel that welcomes both.
04
The design. Classic Aman: warm wood, marble and a sense of calm.
05
The gym. Tied with Gardena Grödnerhof for the best gym in the Dolomites.
06
The lobby restaurant. Fantastic service.

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
Not the place for big views. If a sweeping panorama is the point, look at Forestis or COMO Alpina.
02
Winter minimum stays are unclear. The hotel told me there’s a seven-night minimum in winter, but sample searches don’t show it. I confirm the rules directly with the team before you plan around them.
03
Book a suite. They’re the reason to stay.
04
Expect German and Austrian sauna culture. The main sauna areas are mixed, men and women together. You’ll walk around the spa in a towel or robe, but swimsuits and wraps come off in the saunas and steam rooms. Your body isn’t supposed to touch the wood, so you sit or lie on your towel in the saunas, and on a small towel in the steam rooms. It’s completely normal in this corner of Italy; the pools are swimsuit areas.
05
San Cassiano is quiet out of season. In October it was a ghost town. Come in winter or summer for a village with life in it.
06
Pair it with Aman Venice. Aman offers two nights at Aman Venice and three here, with the transfer included, and I can arrange a helicopter. See the Aman Venice + Aman Rosa Alpina journey →
07
Some of the original building shows. A few of the old walls look their age. Not a reason not to book, just something to know.
