COMO Alpina review

On The Alpe di Siusi Meadows · The Best Ski-In, Ski-Out Hotel In The Dolomites

The best location in the Dolomites for walking straight out onto trails and slopes, with a spa and pool that hold their own against anyone. Not quite the hotel Forestis, Gardena or Aman is — but the price reflects that.

The review

Rolling meadows, towering peaks, and trails and slopes right outside your room.

The location is COMO Alpina’s huge selling point. You’re right on the Alpe di Siusi, the high rolling meadows with mountains towering all around, just over the ridge from Ortisei. The area is protected, so your car needs a permit to drive up, and you can walk out of your room onto the trails in summer and the slopes in winter. It’s the only true ski-in, ski-out hotel of the five I saw, and for a winter trip that matters a lot.

As a hotel, it isn’t quite at the level of Forestis, Gardena Grödnerhof or Aman Rosa Alpina, but the price reflects that. Where it competes head-on is wellness: the spa and pool stack up very nicely against all of them, and like most COMO properties the whole place leans into it.

The rooms are very mountain in style, with beautiful decks and views. They’re very spacious, with large bathrooms and tubs. Dining was solid, and we had a very nice dinner in the formal restaurant, where our servers were great. Service elsewhere was good, if a little awkward at times.

What stood out

The details that made the list

01
True ski-in, ski-out. The best on this list, by a distance. In summer the same applies to hiking: the trails start at your door.
02
The spa and pool. On par with the best in the region, in a hotel built around wellness.
03
Spacious rooms. Big decks and views, large bathrooms and deep tubs.
04
The formal restaurant. A very nice dinner, with great servers.
05
The value. You get one of the best locations in the Dolomites for less than the region’s top hotels.
Know before you book

The Fine Print, From Your Advisor

01
Watch out for the chairlift by the Mountain View rooms. There’s a chairlift right outside them, so they can feel a little loud and not very private as people come up to hike and explore. I hadn’t anticipated it before arriving. In winter I don’t think it would bother you much, but in the shoulder season it’s very much in your view. Tell me how you’re traveling and I’ll steer you to the right room.
02
Your car needs a permit. The Alpe di Siusi is a protected area, and the road up is restricted. The hotel handles the permit; a private transfer avoids the question entirely.
03
Expect German and Austrian sauna culture. The main sauna areas are mixed, men and women together. You’ll walk around the spa in a towel or robe, but swimsuits and wraps come off in the saunas and steam rooms. Your body isn’t supposed to touch the wood, so you sit or lie on your towel in the saunas, and on a small towel in the steam rooms. It’s completely normal in this corner of Italy; the pools are swimsuit areas.
04
Service can be a little uneven. Good overall, and great in the formal restaurant, but occasionally awkward. Not a reason to skip it, just calibrate expectations against Forestis.
05
Best for winter. For a ski trip, this is my first choice in the Dolomites. In summer, it ties with Gardena Grödnerhof for location.
06
Pairs well with Ortisei. Two or three nights here and two or three at Gardena Grödnerhof gives you the meadows and the town, and the transfer between them is short.
