Head-to-head · Amalfi Coast
Two classics of the Amalfi Coast. Il San Pietro sits on the cliffs just outside Positano; Santa Caterina is a family hotel in Amalfi, open since 1904. Here is how I would choose.
Stayed at Santa Caterina · Toured Il San Pietro · October 2026
A sea view from every room, a beach club that keeps the sun when the rest of the coast is in shade, the iconic tennis court and a long list of inclusions.
My Il San Pietro review →
Four generations of one family, a team that stays for decades, and quiet luxury in the tiny details. Stay five nights and you will still be sad to leave.
My Santa Caterina review →
| Il San Pietro | Santa Caterina | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | On the cliffs just outside Positano | In Amalfi |
| The feel | Nautical and bright: blues, whites and tiles | A family home on the sea: quiet, understated luxury |
| Service | Very private: you will only see other guests | A family hotel since 1904; many of the team have been here 15 to 20 years |
| Rooms | Every room has a sea view, facing sunrise or sunset | I book only front sea views |
| Room to ask for | The sunset side; Signature or Prestige for more space | A Special Suite with its own pool, or room 45, where I stayed |
| Beach club | On the sunset side, with sun on the water late into the afternoon | Down through the gardens or by elevator; the water gets dark fairly early |
| Don’t miss | The iconic tennis court, and a complimentary 2-hour yacht cruise | The stairs through the gardens, and the view from the elevator |
| Also here | Michelin-starred dining, cooking and pizza classes | Casa Marchesa: 12 more modern, private rooms with their own pool |
| Arriving | By boat from Naples or Salerno | By boat from Naples or Salerno |
| Best for | Honeymoons, tennis, fall trips, privacy | Slow stays, multigenerational trips, real human service |
Work with me and you get Fora perks, plus someone who knows these hotels personally and personalizes your stay: I request the sunset side at Il San Pietro or room 45 at Santa Caterina, book the tennis court, and arrange the boats and transfers. Same rate as booking direct.
Il San Pietro is the classic, done properly. For me it is one of the two best options in Positano: very private, a sea view from every room, and free shuttles into town when you want the scene.
Santa Caterina is the kind of hotel where you feel like a guest in someone’s home. I stayed there, and it is one of the few hotels this past month that left me with a feeling I can’t quite describe.
You do not have to choose. Many of my clients do both: Santa Caterina for slow days in Amalfi, then a few nights at Il San Pietro in Positano. I can split the stay.

At Il San Pietro, every room is impeccably kept and has a sea view. Some face the sunrise, others the sunset, so tell me which you want. The base rooms are fantastic; Signature and Prestige give you more space.
At Santa Caterina, every category I book faces the sea head-on: the Special Suites, with a private pool over the sea, the Full Sea View Garden Suites, the front sea view Junior Suites, and the Front Sea View Doubles on an upper floor. I stayed in room 45, in a little building just to the left of the main hotel. So private and serene, truly a dream.

Il San Pietro’s beach club is on the sunset side, which is a huge selling point. In the fall, the best time to visit, swim time ends around 4:30 or 5pm at most hotels on the coast. Not here.
Santa Caterina is one of the hotels where the water gets dark fairly early. Getting there is half the fun: walk down through gardens that feel like a fairy tale at least once, and take the elevator another time for the coolest view you have ever seen on the way to the beach.

Santa Caterina is still run by the founding family, and so many of the team have been there 15 to 20 years or more. You dial 260 for the front desk, there is no WhatsApp, and reception keeps the calendar in real books. I spent a full day the way my clients would: coffee in bed, the gym by the sea, a swim, room service, another swim. I never felt bored.
Il San Pietro fills the days for you: a complimentary 2-hour yacht cruise, cooking and pizza classes, a daily cocktail masterclass, Pilates and yoga, the iconic tennis court and Michelin-starred dining.

For a honeymoon, Il San Pietro is #06 in The Fifteen, my honeymoon shortlist, and the privacy is the point.
For a multigenerational trip, Santa Caterina. Families come back for decades, and Casa Marchesa, about 300 meters away, has a three-bedroom villa that keeps everyone together, and a pool just for its guests.
It depends on the trip. Pick Il San Pietro for Positano, the sunset beach club and the tennis court. Pick Santa Caterina to slow down in Amalfi with a family that has run the hotel since 1904. Many of my clients do both.
Il San Pietro. Its beach club is on the sunset side. At Santa Caterina, as at most hotels on the coast, the water gets dark fairly early, and in the fall swim time ends around 4:30 or 5pm.
At Il San Pietro, tell me sunrise or sunset; the base rooms are fantastic, and Signature or Prestige give you more space. At Santa Caterina, a front sea view: a Special Suite with its own pool for a milestone, or room 45, where I stayed.
Il San Pietro is on my honeymoon shortlist, The Fifteen. For a milestone trip at Santa Caterina, I book the one-bedroom Special Suite with its own private pool over the sea.
Santa Caterina. Families come back here for generations, and the three-bedroom villa at Casa Marchesa keeps everyone together. Tell me who is traveling and I will plan the rooms around everyone.
Yes, and I recommend it. Santa Caterina for slow days in Amalfi, then Il San Pietro for a few nights in Positano. Both work beautifully by boat from Naples or Salerno, and I arrange all of it.
Tell me your dates and who is coming, and I will tell you which one fits, or how to split the stay.
