Head-to-head · Amalfi Coast
Two quiet places to stay on the coast. Villa Treville is a private estate on the cliffs just outside Positano; Santa Caterina is a family hotel in Amalfi, open since 1904. Here is how I would choose.
Stayed at Santa Caterina · Toured Villa Treville · October 2026
Probably the most private rooms in Positano, no two alike, eclectic art, warm service and three boats with free shuttles into town.
My Villa Treville review →
Four generations of one family, a team that stays for decades, and quiet luxury in the tiny details. Stay five nights and you will still be sad to leave.

Work with me and you get Fora perks, plus someone who knows these hotels personally and personalizes your stay: I match you to the right room at Villa Treville, request room 45 at Santa Caterina, and arrange the boats and transfers. Same rate as booking direct.
Villa Treville feels more like a private estate on the cliffs than a hotel, and that is exactly the point. Every room is very different, the art is cool and eclectic, and the team is outstanding. For me it is one of the two best options in Positano.
Santa Caterina is the kind of hotel where you feel like a guest in someone’s home. It has been in the same family since 1904, and it knows exactly what it is doing. I stayed there, and I will be back for five nights at least.
You do not have to choose. Many of my clients do both: Santa Caterina for slow days in Amalfi, then a few nights at Villa Treville in Positano. I can split the stay.

At Villa Treville, every room is completely different, so the match matters. Tell me your style and I will get you into the right one. The suite with the outdoor tub and shower is a standout, with one of the coolest showers I have ever seen: a rain shower falling from an old brick dome.
At Santa Caterina, every category I book faces the sea head-on: the Special Suites with a private pool, the Full Sea View Garden Suites, the front sea view Junior Suites and the upper-floor Front Sea View Doubles. I stayed in room 45, in a little building just to the left of the main hotel. So private and serene, truly a dream.

Santa Caterina is still run by the founding family, and so many of the team have been there 15 to 20 years or more. You dial 260 for the front desk, there is no WhatsApp, and reception keeps the calendar in real books with real pens. In a world of constant tech, that face-to-face connection really means something.
Service at Villa Treville was fantastic and warm, from people who clearly love the place.

Villa Treville has a beach club on the rocks, right on the water, three stunning boats with free shuttles into Positano, a spa in an iron-and-glass garden pavilion that opens to the sea, and a gym that looks straight out over the water.
At Santa Caterina, take the stairs down to the beach club at least once; the gardens on the way feel like a fairy tale. The elevator gives you the coolest view you have ever seen on the way to the beach, and the gym looks out at nothing but open sea.

For a couple, Villa Treville: the privacy, the suites and the boats make it one of the most romantic places to stay on the Amalfi Coast.
For a multigenerational trip, Santa Caterina. Families come back for decades, and Casa Marchesa, about 300 meters away, has a three-bedroom villa that keeps everyone together, and a pool just for its guests.
It depends on the trip. Pick Villa Treville for a private estate near Positano with three boats and rooms that are all different. Pick Santa Caterina to slow down in Amalfi with a family that has run the hotel since 1904. Many of my clients do both.
Villa Treville has probably the most private rooms in Positano. At Santa Caterina, room 45 was so private and serene, and Casa Marchesa, 300 meters from the main hotel, is incredibly private, with its own pool.
At Villa Treville, every room is different, so tell me your style and I will match you; the suite with the outdoor tub and shower is a standout. At Santa Caterina, a front sea view: a Special Suite with its own pool for a milestone, or room 45, where I stayed.
Villa Treville is one of the most romantic places to stay on the Amalfi Coast. For a milestone trip at Santa Caterina, I book the one-bedroom Special Suite with its own private pool over the sea.
Santa Caterina. Families come back here for generations, and the three-bedroom villa at Casa Marchesa keeps everyone together. Tell me who is traveling and I will plan the rooms around everyone.
Yes, and I recommend it. Santa Caterina for slow days in Amalfi, then Villa Treville for a few nights in Positano. Both work beautifully by boat from Naples or Salerno, and I arrange all of it.
Tell me your dates and who is coming, and I will tell you which one fits, or how to split the stay.
