Il Sereno or Villa d’Este?

Two hotels near the town of Como, each about an hour from Milan, and opposite ideas of luxury. Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on the lake, modern and private. Villa d’Este is the lake’s original grand hotel. Here is how I would choose.

Choose Il Sereno

My pick of the two

The best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como, and I couldn’t find a single fault. Patricia Urquiola’s glass, walnut and stone, every room facing the water, a heated pool on land and its own Rivas at the dock.

Choose Villa d’Este

If you want the grand classic

Beautiful gardens, a villa on the lakefront, eight clay courts and a lunch that won me over. Service is polished and warm, and Cernobbio is right outside the gate.

Work with me and you get Fora perks, typically a space-available upgrade, daily breakfast and a hotel credit, plus someone who knows these hotels personally: I time Il Sereno bookings to catch its suite offers, match the room to the trip at Villa d’Este, and arrange the car from Milan and the boats once you’re there. Same rate as booking direct.

The question behind the question

Design and the water, or history and a town?

Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como. I don’t usually love modern hotels in Italy, but this one is done exactly right: the service, the food, the views, the room and the privacy all just work. Torno is tiny and the hotel can only be reached by its guests or by boat, so it never feels busy.

Villa d’Este is the institution. The gardens and the villa on the lakefront are beautiful, lunch was fantastic and the service is polished and warm. It has eight clay courts and a town at the gate. I’m told a refresh with fewer rooms is planned, which should put it in the same tier as Il Sereno.

If you want privacy, design and the water right outside your room, choose Il Sereno; it’s my #02 on the lake. If your Como dream is history, tennis or a town to walk into, choose Villa d’Este.

The detail

What to know before you choose

A room at Il Sereno, Lake Como

Two kinds of luxury

Il Sereno opened in 2016 and was refreshed in the last few years. Patricia Urquiola’s design is Japanese-minimalist and warm-industrial, with glass, walnut and stone, and a listening suite that reminded me of the best hi-fi bars in the US. Modern is the point.

Villa d’Este is a renaissance estate whose gardens, mosaics and floating pool have defined Como luxury for generations. It’s my pick on the lake for travelers who want history with their luxury, and the sense that everyone from royalty to film stars swam in this same pool.

Torno or Cernobbio?

Both are near the town of Como and about an hour from Milan by car. Il Sereno’s Torno is a tiny village with not much going on. That’s why it’s so private; when you want to go out, the hotel’s own Rivas take you to dinner across the lake.

Villa d’Este is in Cernobbio, on the town side of the lake. If you want restaurants and shops within walking distance, it’s the best base of the six hotels in my Lake Como ranking, with easy access to the town of Como and the villa circuit by boat.

Rooms and pools

At Il Sereno, every room sees the lake, but entry rooms get a partial view, some through the trees. The Grand Suite Lago adds the head-on view and a private terrace. The pool is heated and built on land just above the water, so it never rocks with boat wakes, and the old boathouse holds a hot tub you can book privately by the hour.

Villa d’Este’s floating pool predates the trend everyone else is chasing. Floating pools move with the water, so if that bothers you, Il Sereno’s is the calmer swim. On rooms, recent client stays have been very positive, and I’ll match the room to your trip.

Tennis, families and groups

Villa d’Este has eight clay courts along the water, #06 on my worldwide tennis ranking. With the estate’s private villas, it’s the best place on the lake for a tennis trip with friends, and it suits multigenerational groups well.

Il Sereno is built for couples. It’s not a family hotel, and I’d only send families with older teenagers who are happy by the pool.

Before you ask

The questions I get

Which is better, Il Sereno or Villa d'Este?

For me, Il Sereno. It’s my #02 on Lake Como, the best true lakefront hotel on the lake, and I couldn’t find a single fault. Villa d’Este is the better choice for history, tennis, groups and a town at the door.

Which is closer to Milan?

They’re about the same: Il Sereno and Villa d’Este are each about an hour from Milan by private car. I arrange it.

Which is better for a honeymoon?

Il Sereno. It’s private, quiet and built for couples, and the boathouse hot tub is one of the most romantic hours you can have on the lake. For the full honeymoon, pair it with Passalacqua, ten minutes away by boat. Here’s the pairing.

Which is better for tennis?

Villa d’Este, with eight clay courts along the water. It’s the best hotel on the lake for a tennis trip with friends, especially paired with one of the estate’s private villas.

Can I bring children?

Villa d’Este suits multigenerational groups. Il Sereno isn’t a family hotel; I’d only send families with older teenagers. For a family trip, I’d also look at Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

Is Villa d'Este being renovated?

I’m told Villa d’Este plans to reduce the number of rooms and modernize, which will put it in the same tier as Il Sereno, Passalacqua and Grand Hotel Tremezzo. Recent client stays have already been very positive.
