Il Sereno on the water in Torno, Lake ComoA balcony at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni looking up Lake Como from Bellagio

Head-to-head · Lake Como

Il Sereno or Villa Serbelloni?

I stayed at both, and they could hardly be more different. Il Sereno is modern, private and the best true lakefront hotel on Como. Villa Serbelloni is very historic, with the lake’s best swimming, in the middle of Bellagio. Here is how I would choose.

Choose Il Sereno

My pick of the two

I couldn’t find a single fault. Every room faces the water, the pool is heated and on land, there’s a hot tub in the old boathouse, and Torno is so quiet there are almost no day visitors.

Choose Villa Serbelloni

If you love old Italian grand hotels

Frescoes, chandeliers and antiques, all beautifully kept, plus a stunning modern spa, a speakeasy bar and the best setup on the lake for swimming. Bellagio is right outside, crowds and all.

Work with me and you get Fora perks, typically a space-available upgrade, daily breakfast and a hotel credit, plus someone who knows these hotels personally: I time Il Sereno bookings to catch its suite offers, request a lake-view balcony room at Serbelloni, and arrange the cars and private boats. Same rate as booking direct.

The question behind the question

A modern hideaway, or a grand hotel in the busiest village?

Il Sereno is the best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como. I truly couldn’t find a fault with anything: the service, the food, the views, the room and the privacy all just work. Because Torno is tiny and the hotel is reachable only by its guests or by boat, it never feels busy.

Villa Serbelloni is an interesting hotel, and I’m still making up my mind about it. It’s very historic and beautifully kept, the spa is stunning, and in summer it would be the best hotel on the lake for swimming. But the decor is a bit too old for my taste, and Bellagio is incredibly crowded. I was there in October; I can’t imagine July and August.

For a couple, I’d book Il Sereno and visit Bellagio by boat. If you love old Italian hotels and art, and Bellagio is the point of your trip, Serbelloni is a beautiful choice.

The detail

What to know before you choose

Quiet Torno or busy Bellagio?

Il Sereno is in Torno, a tiny village near the town of Como with not much going on. That’s the point: it’s private and calm. When you want to go out, the hotel’s own Rivas make dinner across the lake easy.

Villa Serbelloni puts all of Bellagio’s restaurants outside the front door, plus three places to eat inside. The catch is that Bellagio is packed with day-trippers, even in October. You can visit it easily by boat from almost anywhere on the lake, so think hard about whether you want to sleep there.

Modern or historic

Il Sereno opened in 2016 and was refreshed in the last few years. Patricia Urquiola’s design is Japanese-minimalist and warm-industrial, and the quality of every detail is exceptional. The sheets are the softest I’ve ever slept on.

Villa Serbelloni is the real thing if you love old Italian grand hotels: frescoed ceilings, chandeliers, damask walls and antique furniture, all beautifully maintained. For my taste the decor is a bit too old. If you prefer something fresher, this is where Il Sereno wins.

Swimming, pools and the spa

If being in the lake matters most, Villa Serbelloni has the best setup I’ve seen on Como: a pool, a beach and a floating pier you can jump into the water from. Its spa was the other surprise, stunning and modern in a hotel this historic.

Il Sereno’s pool is heated and built on land just above the water, so it never rocks with boat wakes, and the poolside service is excellent. The old boathouse holds a hot tub you can book privately by the hour, one of the most romantic hours you can have on the lake.

Rooms and getting there

At Il Sereno, every room sees the lake, but entry rooms get a partial view, some through the trees. The Grand Suite Lago adds the head-on view and a private terrace. It’s about an hour from Milan by private car.

At Villa Serbelloni, ask for a lake-view room with a balcony. The road to Bellagio is narrow and slow, so I arrange a private car from Milan to the water in Como, then about 30 minutes by private boat to the hotel’s dock.

Before you ask

The questions I get

Which is better, Il Sereno or Villa Serbelloni?

For me, Il Sereno. It’s my #02 on Lake Como and I couldn’t find a single fault. Villa Serbelloni is right if you love historic hotels and art, want to swim in the lake, and Bellagio is the point of your trip.

Which is better for a honeymoon?

Il Sereno. It’s private, quiet and built for couples. For the full honeymoon, I pair it with Passalacqua, ten minutes away by boat. Here’s the pairing.

Which is better for swimming?

Villa Serbelloni, with a pool, a beach and a floating pier into the lake. Il Sereno has the better pool for a calm swim: heated and on land.

Should I stay in Bellagio?

I’d steer most clients away from sleeping there. Bellagio is very crowded, even in October. Stay somewhere calmer, like Il Sereno, and visit by boat. If Bellagio is the point, Villa Serbelloni puts you right in it.

Which room should I book at each?

At Il Sereno, the Grand Suite Lago, with the head-on view and a private terrace. At Villa Serbelloni, a lake-view room with a balcony.

Can I bring children?

Il Sereno isn’t a family hotel; I’d only send families with older teenagers who are happy by the pool. For a family trip on the lake, I’d look at Grand Hotel Tremezzo.
