The review

Spectacular, almost awe-inspiring.

Borgo Santandrea sits above Conca dei Marini, just along the coast from Amalfi. It is very modern, in the rooms and in the facilities, and that makes it feel different from every other hotel on the Amalfi Coast. I liked that.

The beach is the star: beautiful, massive and a proper beach. Dining at Alici is fantastic, and the service is refined but warm.

Two things to know. The sun leaves the water early, so in the fall your swim time ends around 4:30 or 5pm. And the private pool rooms are not that private. Come in May or June, or in September, and let me pick the room.

What stood out

Why I’d book it

01
The beach. Beautiful, massive and a proper beach.
02
Alici. Fantastic dining.
03
The service. Refined but warm.
04
Modern, all the way through. The rooms and the facilities feel different from every other hotel on the Amalfi Coast.
05
On my World’s 50 Best list. It is No. 84 on my World’s 50 Best (51–100), and one of my two honeymoon picks on that list, with Il San Pietro.
Know before you book

The fine print, from your advisor

01
The private pool rooms are not that private. You can look down on your neighbors, and they can look down on you. Not everyone will mind, but it is important to know. Tell me what matters to you and I will request the right room.
02
The sun leaves the water early. In the fall, your swim time ends around 4:30 or 5pm. If late-afternoon sun matters, Il San Pietro’s beach club is on the sunset side.
03
When to go. May to June, or September.
04
It is not Positano. This side of the coast is quieter. If you want the buzz, add a night or two at Le Sirenuse, and I can split the stay.
05
Arrive by boat. A boat transfer from Naples or Salerno is practical and enjoyable. The nearest helipad is in Scala, close to Ravello. Reach out and I will handle it.
Before you ask

The questions I get

Where is Borgo Santandrea?

Above Conca dei Marini, just along the coast from Amalfi. A boat transfer from Naples or Salerno is practical and enjoyable, and the nearest helipad is in Scala, close to Ravello.

Does Borgo Santandrea have a beach?

Yes, and it is the best part: beautiful, massive and a proper beach. The sun leaves the water early, though, so in the fall your swim time ends around 4:30 or 5pm.

Should I book a room with a private pool?

Think twice. The private pool rooms are not that private: you can look down on your neighbors, and they can look down on you. Not everyone will mind, but it is important to know.

When is the best time to go?

May to June, or September.

Santa Caterina or Borgo Santandrea?

Borgo Santandrea is spectacular and brand new in feel. Santa Caterina is the opposite: it has been here for over a century and it knows exactly what it is doing. If you want warmth and history over a statement, choose Santa Caterina.

Is Borgo Santandrea good for a honeymoon?

Yes. It is one of my two honeymoon picks on my World’s 50 Best (51–100) list, alongside Il San Pietro.
