I’ve personally stayed at nearly every luxury hotel in both valleys. My #01 and #02 are both Napa — and yet the hotel I’ve returned to more than any other, anywhere, is in Sonoma. That contradiction is the whole decision, so here it is honestly.

If the trip is the classic
The benchmark end of wine country: Meadowood’s Aman-standard service above St. Helena, Four Seasons inside its own working Calistoga vineyard with a Michelin star on property, Auberge’s famous terrace over the valley.
Choose Sonoma
If you want it relaxed
Healdsburg is a more relaxed, less commercial base — and my own preference. Montage’s vineyard rooms with their fire pits are the reason I’ve stayed twenty-plus times, with a complimentary shuttle to the plaza so nobody argues about who’s driving home from dinner.

The question behind the question
My ranking says Napa. My calendar says Sonoma.
For the celebration — the honeymoon, the milestone anniversary, the trip where the hotel is the event — Napa wins on the strength of Meadowood and Four Seasons alone. Every time I go to Meadowood I feel well taken care of, and I can’t say that about every property on my list.
But the trip I actually keep taking is Healdsburg: twenty-plus stays at Montage and counting. If wine country is going to become your place rather than your occasion, that’s the valley — more relaxed, less commercial, and the fire pit over the vines never gets old.
