Keith's Rankings

The Best Luxury Hotels on Lake Como, Ranked

I stayed at or toured every hotel on this list in October 2026. Here’s my ranking, and who I’d send to each one.

6 Luxury Hotels, Ranked  ·  October 2026 Stays & Site Visits

Most “best Lake Como hotels” lists are compiled from press materials and online reviews. This one comes from staying at and touring each of these hotels myself in October 2026.

Planning a honeymoon? See my Passalacqua + Il Sereno pairing →

The ranking runs from my personal favorite down, and the gaps are small: every hotel here is excellent for the right traveler. Passalacqua sits third not because it falls short, but because it isn’t my personal style. For a honeymoon, it’s the best hotel on the lake.

Booking through me costs the same as booking direct, and you get two things on top: Fora perks, typically a space-available upgrade, daily breakfast and a hotel credit, and someone who knows these hotels personally and personalizes your stay. I also handle the logistics that make Como work: a private car from Milan for the hotels near the town of Como, and a private boat from Como for the hotels farther up the lake.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo

My Favorite Hotel On Lake Como

Perfect For · Families, First Trips, Couples Who Like Energy

Walking into Grand Hotel Tremezzo is like stepping into a Wes Anderson film. The 1910 landmark sits in the middle of the lake, looking straight across at Bellagio, with tiered gardens behind it, five restaurants, a clay tennis court and some of the best rooms on Como: lake-view junior suites with balconies that feel as though they sit on top of the water. It’s the most fun hotel on the lake, and the best located.

Book a junior suite or above. The lake-view rooms with balconies are spacious and beautifully restored. Garden-view rooms look onto genuinely pretty gardens and cost less.

It’s lively. Outside guests are welcome and the lower floating pool draws a crowd, but the garden pool and the indoor-outdoor pool stay calm and private.

Arrive by boat. A private car from Milan to the town of Como, then a private boat to the hotel’s dock. I arrange both.

The most fun hotel on Lake Como, in the best spot on the lake. Book a lake-view junior suite and spend your afternoons at the garden pool.

Il Sereno

The Best True Lakefront Hotel On Como

Perfect For · Couples, Honeymoons, Design Lovers

I stayed at Il Sereno and couldn’t find a single fault. Patricia Urquiola’s glass, walnut and stone sit right on the water in Torno, and every room looks at the lake. The pool is heated and built on land, the old boathouse holds a hot tub you can book privately by the hour, and the hotel’s own Rivas make dinners across the lake effortless. Because Torno is tiny and the hotel can only be reached by its guests or by boat, it never feels busy.

The Grand Suite is the one. Entry rooms have a partial lake view, some through the trees. The Grand Suite adds the head-on view and a private terrace, at about the price of an entry room at Passalacqua.

Built for couples. It’s private and quiet, and not a family hotel.

About an hour from Milan. A private car is the easiest way in. I arrange it, along with boats for anything beyond the hotel’s own Rivas.

The best true lakefront hotel on Lake Como, and the one I’d choose for privacy, design and the water right outside your room.

Passalacqua

The Best Honeymoon Hotel On Lake Como

Perfect For · Honeymoons, Milestones, Two Couples Traveling Together

Passalacqua is whimsical and unlike anywhere else in the world: a 1787 villa in Moltrasio that’s meant to feel like your own home, filled with antiques the family collected over time. Only hotel guests can use the restaurants and Moroccan-inspired spa, so with just 24 rooms it feels genuinely exclusive. I loved it, but it isn’t my personal style; with two restaurants and a quiet village, I’d want a livelier base after a couple of nights. For a honeymoon, nothing on the lake compares.

Book a lakeside room or the Palazzo. Those rooms are generously sized. It’s a terraced garden property, so most rooms see the lake in the distance rather than up close.

Plan a few dinners out. With two restaurants, dinner across the lake by boat is the best way to round out a stay. I arrange it.

Pair it with Il Sereno. Two nights at each, ten minutes apart by private boat, is the honeymoon I’d book. See the pairing.

The best honeymoon hotel on Lake Como. If this is the trip that calls for it, book it.

Villa d’Este’s clay tennis courts and gardens above Lake Como

Villa d’Este

The Grand Classic, Getting Better

Perfect For · Classicists, Tennis Trips With Friends, Multigenerational Groups

Villa d’Este won me over with its gardens, the villa on the lakefront and a fantastic lunch. Service is polished and warm, it’s livelier than its reputation, and recent client stays have been very positive. In Cernobbio, it puts a town at your door and sits about an hour from Milan. I’m told a refresh with fewer rooms is planned, which should bring it up to the level of the three hotels above it.

Eight clay courts. The best hotel on the lake for a tennis trip with friends, especially paired with one of the estate’s private villas.

A town at the door. If you want restaurants and shops within walking distance, Cernobbio is the best base of any hotel on this list.

My pick over Villa Serbelloni. If you’re weighing the two grand classics, here’s why.

The lake’s original grand hotel, polished and warm, and the best choice for tennis and for having a town on your doorstep.

The Lake Como EDITION

Modern, Lively and Not for Everyone

Perfect For · Younger Travelers, LGBTQ+ Travelers, Families In The Two-Bedroom Suite

The EDITION turned a former hotel in Cadenabbia, next door to Grand Hotel Tremezzo, into a 148-room modern hotel: white, neutrals, green marble and arches, with the brand’s lively, social energy. The spa and gym are outstanding, and the two-bedroom suite is good value for a family. Dining is limited, there’s no town at the door, and I noticed some early wear in my room.

Book a lake view, third floor or above. Lower floors sit above the loud casual restaurant, and non-lake-view rooms face the spa or an interior courtyard.

Compare it with its neighbor. Lake-view rooms cost about the same as at Grand Hotel Tremezzo next door. Here’s how they compare.

Arrive by boat. A private car to Como, then a private boat. I arrange both.

A neat, modern hotel that’s right for a lot of travelers. If you want classic Como at a similar price, walk next door.

Villa Serbelloni’s beach and floating pier on Lake Como

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni

Historic, With The Lake’s Best Swimming

Perfect For · Lovers Of Historic Italian Hotels And Art, Swimmers, Travelers Set On Bellagio

Villa Serbelloni is very historic and beautifully maintained, at the water’s edge in Bellagio. Its stunning modern spa was a surprise in a hotel this traditional, the little speakeasy bar is a gem, and with a pool, a beach and a floating pier into the lake, it’s the best hotel on the lake for actually swimming. Service is formal but warm. The decor is a bit too old for my taste, and Bellagio is very crowded, even in October.

Ask for a lake-view room with a balcony. The rooms are classic: frescoes, chandeliers, damask and antiques.

Bellagio is the trade-off. The village is packed with day-trippers in high season. You can visit it easily by boat from anywhere on the lake.

Arrive by boat. A private car to Como, then a private boat to Bellagio. I arrange both.

A beautiful, very historic hotel with a stunning spa and the lake’s best swimming. If you’re weighing it against Villa d’Este, I’d choose Villa d’Este.
