Head-to-head · Amalfi Coast
I stayed at both this October, and they are very different stays. Le Sirenuse is lively, formal and right in the middle of Positano; Santa Caterina is a family hotel in Amalfi where you feel like a guest in someone’s home. Here is how I would choose.

Lively, formal and right in the middle of town. Stunning art, the lookout over the dome and an out-of-this-world breakfast.
My Le Sirenuse review →
A family hotel since 1904, a team that stays for decades, and quiet luxury in the tiny details. Stay five nights and you will still be sad to leave.

Work with me and you get Fora perks, plus someone who knows these hotels personally and personalizes your stay: I secure a true sea view at Le Sirenuse and book the sunset cruise in advance, request room 45 at Santa Caterina, and arrange the transfers. Same rate as booking direct.
Le Sirenuse is a really cool, lively property in the middle of Positano. That is either a selling point or a sore point, depending on who you are. Service is very formal, and you come to see and be seen.
Santa Caterina is quiet where Le Sirenuse is lively. The luxury is quiet and lives in the tiny details, the owners still remember guests down to the room numbers, and you can spend a whole day between your room, the gym and the sea without once wondering what to do next.
If you want to walk out the door into Positano, pick Le Sirenuse. If you want to slow down, pick Santa Caterina. Many of my clients split a trip between Amalfi and Positano, and I can arrange that too.

At Le Sirenuse, I would only stay in a true sea-view room or suite. The rest either have courtyard views, or the pool view is right on top of the pool, and it is loud. The sea-view rooms go first, often close to a year out for peak weeks.
At Santa Caterina, every category I book faces the sea head-on: the Special Suites with a private pool, the Full Sea View Garden Suites, the front sea view Junior Suites and the upper-floor Front Sea View Doubles. I stayed in room 45, in a little building just to the left of the main hotel. So private and serene, truly a dream.

Service at Le Sirenuse is very formal. The artwork around the property is stunning, the lookout over the church dome is truly stunning, and the breakfast is out of this world.
Santa Caterina has been in the Gambardella family since 1904, and so many of the team have been there 15 to 20 years or more. It is old-school on purpose: you dial 260 for the front desk, there is no WhatsApp, and reception keeps the calendar in real books with real pens. I loved calling down for a bucket of ice for the wine.

Le Sirenuse has the rooftop pool, #02 on my worldwide pools list, and a new beach club with complimentary boats at 10:30 and 12:30. The hotel also runs a sunset cruise, but book it in advance. I learned that the hard way.
At Santa Caterina, take the stairs down to the beach club at least once; the gardens on the way feel like a fairy tale. The elevator gives you the coolest view you have ever seen on the way to the beach. The Special Suites have their own pool over the sea.

Santa Caterina is wonderful for multigenerational trips. Families come back for decades, and Casa Marchesa, about 300 meters away, has 12 more modern, private rooms, a three-bedroom villa and a pool just for its guests. Stay at least five nights.
Le Sirenuse is for travelers who want the energy of Positano at the door. If that is your Positano, this is your hotel.
I stayed at both, and it depends on what you want. Le Sirenuse if you want to walk into Positano and be part of the scene. Santa Caterina if you want to slow down with a family that has run the hotel since 1904.
At Le Sirenuse, only a true sea-view room or suite. At Santa Caterina, a front sea view: a Special Suite with its own pool for a milestone, or room 45, where I stayed.
They are different styles. Service at Le Sirenuse is very formal. At Santa Caterina it is personal and face to face: so many of the team have been there 15 to 20 years or more, and the owner remembered a client of mine down to the room numbers.
Santa Caterina. Families come back for generations, and the three-bedroom villa at Casa Marchesa keeps everyone together.
I arrange the private transfer from Naples or Salerno to Le Sirenuse. For Santa Caterina, a boat transfer from Naples or Salerno is practical and enjoyable. The nearest helipad is in Scala, close to Ravello.
Yes. Many of my clients do slow days at Santa Caterina in Amalfi, then a few nights in Positano. If you want to walk into town there, that is Le Sirenuse; for privacy, Il San Pietro or Villa Treville. I can split the stay.
Tell me your dates and who is coming, and I will tell you which one fits, or how to split the stay.
